Type 2 SPDs, included with every board

Surge Protection in Sussex

Every voltage spike that gets into your wiring shortens the life of something expensive, from the boiler PCB to the router that runs your working week. A Type 2 surge protection device in the consumer unit clamps transient overvoltages for the whole house, not one socket. It comes as standard with every board we fit across Sussex, and we can retrofit one to your existing board from £165.

The service

The quiet damage a surge does

A transient overvoltage is a spike lasting microseconds, far too fast to trip a breaker, that rides in on your supply when the grid switches loads, a lift motor or compressor starts nearby, or lightning strikes within a mile or two. Sussex gives it plenty of chances: storms rolling in off the Channel along the coast, dense Victorian and Edwardian terraces in the coastal towns from Worthing to Hastings sharing the same supply infrastructure, rural homes in the Weald and on the Downs fed by overhead lines, and a fast growing crowd of EV chargers and heat pumps switching hard on every street from Chichester to Rye.

One big spike can kill a device outright, but most power surge damage is slower and sneakier. Repeated small surges cook electronics a little at a time: boiler PCBs, induction hobs, solar inverters, TVs, routers and smart home kit all fail early and nobody connects the dots. A plug-in strip guards one socket, badly, and wears out without telling you. A Type 2 SPD in the consumer unit clamps the spike at the origin, so every circuit in the house is behind it.

Every board we fit includes a Type 2 SPD as standard, so what you get is a fusebox with surge protection wired in at the origin, where it can shield the whole installation. If your existing board is a modern metal unit with a spare way, we can usually retrofit the SPD in about an hour, tested, certificated and priced fixed before we arrive.

Safety aspects

Why surge protection is a safety device, not a gadget

An SPD is usually sold as insurance for your electronics. That undersells it. Here is what it quietly does for the safety of a Sussex home, in plain English.

  1. Insulation damage is a fire path Repeated small surges stress and degrade the insulation on cables and inside appliances year after year. Weakened insulation is how tracking faults and electrical fires start, and an SPD stops that erosion at the origin of the installation.
  2. Safety-critical kit stays alive Interlinked smoke alarms, medical equipment and emergency lighting are all electronics too. A surge that takes them out does not just cost money, it removes the things that protect you while you sleep.
  3. The SPD sacrifices itself, not your wiring The device absorbs the surge energy so your cables and appliances do not have to, and it wears out doing it. A status indicator on the front shows green while it is healthy and changes colour when the cartridge needs swapping.
  4. It protects the protection Modern RCDs, RCBOs and AFDDs contain electronics of their own. A hard spike can degrade the very devices that guard you against shock and fire, so the SPD stands in front of them as well as the telly.
  5. Amendment 2 makes it the rule Amendment 2 of BS 7671 requires overvoltage protection to be considered on every new consumer unit, and in a home the practical answer is almost always to fit an SPD. We fit one as standard rather than making it a decision you have to get right.
  6. Earthing makes it work An SPD survives a surge by diverting the energy to earth, so it is only as good as the earthing behind it. We verify the earthing and bonding on every install, which matters in older Sussex homes, from Victorian and Edwardian terraces in the coastal towns to flint cottages in the villages, where it has often never been tested.
What it stands in front of

One device, every circuit

Fitted at the board, a Type 2 SPD protects everything supplied from it. In a typical Sussex home that means:

  • Boiler and heating controls, the PCB is the classic surge casualty
  • Induction hobs, ovens and appliance electronics
  • Your EV charger and its charging electronics
  • Heat pump inverters and controllers
  • Solar inverters and battery storage systems
  • TVs, routers, consoles and home office computers
  • Interlinked smoke alarms and smart home hubs
  • The RCDs, RCBOs and AFDDs in the board itself
Ways to get protected

Three routes, all fixed price

Included with every new board

£0 extra

Every consumer unit we fit across Sussex includes a Type 2 SPD as standard, never as an upsell. Fuse box replacement from £425.

Retrofit to your existing board

from £165

A modern metal board with a spare way can usually take an SPD in about an hour, tested and certificated. The right move if your board is fine but your electronics are unguarded.

Type 1+2 combined protection

from £395

For properties with a lightning protection system or an overhead supply, common in rural homes across the Weald and the Downs, a combined Type 1+2 device handles direct strike energy as well.

How it works

From photo to protected

Step
01

Send a photo, get a same day answer

Text us a photo of your board and your postcode. We will tell you whether it already has an SPD, whether it can take one, and give you a fixed price the same day, anywhere in Sussex.

Step
02

Booked within the week

Retrofit slots are scheduled 3 to 5 working days out, and the phone is answered 8am to 8pm, 7 days. We confirm the arrival window the night before and text when we are on the way.

Step
03

Fitted, earthed and tested

The SPD goes into the board, connections are torque checked and the earthing that makes it work is verified and tested. Power is off briefly and the whole visit takes around an hour.

Step
04

Certificated within 48 hours

Your certificate arrives by email within 48 hours, and we show you the status indicator before we leave so you know exactly what healthy looks like.

Surge protection FAQs

For new consumer units, effectively yes. Amendment 2 of BS 7671 requires overvoltage protection to be considered on every new board, and for homes the practical outcome is that an SPD is fitted unless there is a documented reason not to. There is no law forcing you to retrofit one to an existing board, but if you have an EV charger, a heat pump, solar panels or a modern boiler, the electronics at risk are worth far more than the device. Every board we fit across Sussex includes a Type 2 SPD as standard, so with us it is never an optional extra.

No. A plug-in strip only stands in front of the sockets on that strip. It does nothing for your lighting, boiler, hob, EV charger or anything else hard wired, and most are built to a price with a small energy rating that quietly wears out. A Type 2 SPD in the consumer unit clamps a transient overvoltage at the origin of the installation, so every circuit in the house sits behind it. By all means keep a good strip under the desk as a second layer, but it is not a substitute for protection at the board.

Every SPD we fit has a status indicator on the front, typically a small window that shows green while the device is healthy and changes colour once the protection has been used up. An SPD is sacrificial by design, so after years of soaking up surges the cartridge can reach the end of its life. Glance at the window whenever you test your smoke alarms, and we check it as part of every EICR we carry out across Sussex. If it needs replacing, the cartridge swaps in minutes without changing the board.

Yes, and for many Sussex homes that is exactly why we fit one. A Type 2 SPD at the consumer unit protects everything supplied from it, including the EV charger circuit and the solar inverter, both of which are packed with sensitive electronics, and some manufacturers expect surge protection to be in place before they honour a warranty claim. Where a charger sits at the end of a long outdoor run, an additional SPD at the equipment itself can be worth adding, and we will tell you honestly at survey whether yours needs it.

Yes, and if your board is due for replacement anyway it is usually the best value route. Every new board we fit already has the Type 2 SPD built in, whether that is a dual RCD board from £425 or a full RCBO board from £625, and the price includes full testing, an Electrical Installation Certificate and Part P notification to Building Control. If your existing board is modern and healthy, a retrofit from £165 is the cheaper way to the same protection.

It is simply a consumer unit with a surge protection device fitted inside the enclosure, usually beside the main switch. Some manufacturers sell boards with the SPD installed at the factory, and plenty of customers just ask for a fusebox with surge protection, which describes the same thing. Whatever you call it, the device clamps transient overvoltages at the origin of the installation so every circuit sits behind it, and every board we fit across Sussex comes supplied this way as standard.
