Scattered rural homes

Country homes set along quiet lanes

Nash Street is a scattering of homes rather than a village with a centre, and the properties are as varied as you would expect in farming country: older cottages and farmhouses, later detached houses, and buildings that have changed use over time. Plumbing, heating and wiring have usually been updated piecemeal, which matters more than people think when the fuse box is replaced.

A board change is a good moment to tidy up what has built up around the old one. We remove old switch fuses and add-on units, gather circuits into a single modern consumer unit and label everything clearly. Prices run from £495 for a dual RCD board with 10 ways to £795 for an RCBO board of 14 to 16 ways, the size a larger farmhouse needs.

  • Old switch fuses taken out
  • Circuits gathered onto one board
  • Every way clearly labelled
  • Larger boards for bigger farmhouses

The green and yellow cables that often go missing

When pipework is changed from copper to plastic, or an oil boiler and tank are fitted, the main protective bonding that should link metal services to the earthing terminal is often disturbed, left off or never added. In older country homes modernised in stages, it is common to find bonding missing on the incoming water pipe, the oil supply or both.

Bonding is part of the earthing that lets your RCDs and breakers do their job, so we check it on every board change. Where a bond is missing or undersized, we tell you, explain why it matters and can usually put it right during the same visit.

  • Water pipe bonding checked
  • Oil supply bonding checked
  • Undersized bonds identified
  • Earthing recorded on the certificate

Nash Street jobs: travel and timing

Nash Street is served from our Brighton base. We usually come along the A22 and then out onto the lanes. Since addresses here are split across two postcodes, please give the full address and a nearby landmark when booking, along with board photos so we can fix the price. Nash Street questions

Still not sure?

Call for a straight answer from an installer, not a call centre.

Not for us. Both sides of Nash Street are in Chiddingly parish under Wealden District Council, so the Part P notification goes to the same place and the price is identical. The postcode only matters for finding you, which is why we ask for the full address and a description of the entrance when you book.

The boiler circuit is tested along with every other circuit when the new board goes in, and the fused spur feeding it is checked for condition and the correct fuse rating. If the boiler is supplied from an old separate fuse unit rather than the main board, we bring it onto the new consumer unit.

Possibly not where the pipe enters, because plastic does not carry a fault into the house. But if the pipework changes back to copper inside, or other metal services such as an oil line come in, those may still need bonding. We assess what you actually have and only fit what the regulations call for.
