Where the house is only part of the picture
In a farming hamlet, the fuse box in the house often feeds far more than the house. Cables run out to barns, stores, stables and garages, some buried, some clipped along walls, many added by different people as buildings changed use. It is common for an old house board to be the only protection on a long cable heading across a yard.
Before quoting we ask which buildings take power from your board and how far away they are. On the day we test each outgoing supply properly, so you know which are sound, which are tired, and which may need attention before long.
- Every outgoing supply identified
- Long cable runs tested
- Faults explained in plain terms
- Fixed price agreed before we start

Sub-mains to barns and stables done properly
A supply to an outbuilding is known as a sub-main, and it needs the right protection at the house end and a suitable board or switch at the far end. Older installations sometimes feed a barn straight off a spare fuse, with no RCD, a cable too small for the distance, or an earth that has never been checked.
When we replace your board, each sub-main gets its own correctly rated protective device, and we check that the cable, earthing and distant board are fit for what you run out there. If the outbuilding supply needs more than a board change, we explain why and quote it separately.
- Correct protection for each sub-main
- Outbuilding earthing checked
- Cable size checked against distance
- Separate quote for extra work

From our base in Brighton & Hove we drive the A27 towards Chichester and then head north into the Downs towards the Mardens. The distance is not something you pay for. Asked in North Marden
Call for a straight answer from an installer, not a call centre.
Call 0333 360 8691Yes. The cable to the barn should have its own correctly rated device in the house board, and the barn should have a small board or suitable switch so it can be isolated out there. The sockets and lights in the barn also need RCD protection. We set all of this up when we replace the main board.
Not for testing. We can check the condition of a buried cable from each end without digging it up. Knowing the route matters more if you plan to dig, fence or lay a new track, so we will mention it, but for a board change the test readings tell us what we need to know.
It depends whether you might use it again. An unused cable left live can be damaged without anyone noticing, so we can either disconnect it safely at the board and label it for the future, or keep it on its own protected way. We talk it through with you on the day.
