Why the lights go out when the kettle fails
In a village with houses of different ages, one of the most common boards is a split load unit with one or two RCDs, each covering several circuits. When a single appliance develops a fault, its RCD trips and takes every circuit on that side with it, frequently including the lights and the freezer. Older fuse boxes with no RCD at all offer even less.
A full RCBO board gives each circuit its own combined breaker and RCD, so a faulty kettle only switches off the kitchen sockets. For 8 ways the cost is £625, rising to £695 for 10 to 12 ways, and Type 2 surge protection is part of the price at both sizes.
- One fault, one circuit off
- Freezer kept on its own way
- Lighting separate from sockets
- Surge protection built in

Finding the fault before changing the board
A board that trips repeatedly is not always the board's fault. Damp in an outside socket, a failing immersion element or an old appliance leaking current to earth can all trip an RCD. Changing the board without finding the cause just moves the problem, so we test circuit by circuit to pin it down.
Once the culprit is identified we tell you whether it is a wiring repair or an appliance to retire, and quote any repair separately before the new board goes in. You end up with protection that only acts when it should, and a written record of every reading.
- Insulation tested circuit by circuit
- Outside sockets checked for damp
- Appliance faults identified
- Repairs quoted before work

Asked in Little London
Call for a straight answer from an installer, not a call centre.
Call 0333 360 8691Night time trips often point to something that switches itself on: an immersion heater on a timer, a storage heater, a freezer defrost cycle or an outside light in damp weather. The RCD is doing its job by detecting leakage. We test each circuit to find the one that is leaking, then explain whether a repair or a replacement appliance will cure it.
If nuisance tripping is the reason you are calling, usually yes. Dual RCD protection, from £425, still groups circuits under shared RCDs, so a single fault can cut several at once. Spend from £625 on full RCBO protection and each circuit is isolated on its own, which also makes any later fault far quicker to trace.
Yes, once. Switch off or unplug anything you suspect, then push the RCD back up. If it holds, plug things back in one at a time to find the culprit. If it trips straight away with everything unplugged, the fault is in the fixed wiring, so leave it off and call us rather than forcing it.
