Scattered rural homes

Rural homes heated without mains gas

Treyford is a handful of houses, cottages and farm buildings rather than a village street, and homes in hamlets like this are often beyond the gas main, heating with oil, LPG, wood or electricity instead. The electrics have usually been updated in stages, so a fuse box may look newer than the wiring it serves, or the other way round.

Our testing tells you which. We check each circuit twice, once before the old board is removed and once after the new one goes in, then list the results on a certificate emailed to you within 48 hours. If anything needs attention, we explain it in plain words and price it separately.

Planning the board before the heat pump arrives

An air source heat pump is usually one of the largest loads in a home, and installers often add a hot water cylinder with an immersion heater, plus controls and sometimes a buffer tank. That means new circuits, and an older fuse box with no spare ways, no RCD protection or a tired main switch is rarely suitable.

Changing the board first gives the heat pump installer somewhere sensible to connect. We leave spare ways, record the main fuse size and earthing we find, and give you test results to pass on. Your heat pump installer then deals with notifying the network operator about the new load.

  • Spare ways left for new circuits
  • Main fuse and earthing recorded
  • Results ready for your installer
  • Surge protection for the controls

Treyford questions

Asked in Treyford

Still not sure?

Call for a straight answer from an installer, not a call centre.

Call 0333 360 8691

Ideally, yes. If the board is changed before the heat pump goes in, the installer connects to a modern unit with spare capacity, and any problems with earthing or old circuits are already dealt with. Doing it afterwards often means extra visits and a temporary arrangement. Tell us your installation date and we will work back from it.

It depends on your existing main fuse and everything else you run. We record the main fuse rating and the earthing arrangement during our work and tell you what we find. The heat pump installer then notifies or applies to UK Power Networks, who decide whether the supply needs upgrading.

Enough for the heat pump, its controls and any new immersion heater, plus one or two for later, such as an EV charger or a battery. We look at the plans you have and size the board to suit. Prices are fixed by board size, so you can see the cost of extra ways before deciding.
