Rural homes in Kirdford parish

Country houses, country supplies

We will not pretend to know every house in a hamlet this size. What we can say is that rural homes in this part of Kirdford parish are typically detached, often older, and commonly supplied by overhead lines rather than a buried cable. Boards in properties like these range from wooden backed fuse panels to plastic units fitted twenty or thirty years ago.

However old the current board, the new one is steel, has Type 2 surge protection fitted, and every circuit on it gets a full test. If your home also feeds a garage, barn or stable, tell us when you send photos so we can include that supply in the fixed price.

  • Old panels and plastic units replaced
  • Steel enclosure fitted
  • Every circuit tested
  • Outbuilding supplies priced in

Testing the earth rod as well as the board

Homes fed by overhead lines often get no earth from the network, which leaves them depending on an earth rod of their own, sunk into the ground. This arrangement is called TT earthing. Because the rod on its own cannot clear a fault quickly, RCD protection on every circuit is essential, and the rod itself has to stay in good condition.

While the board is being changed, we take a resistance reading on the earth electrode, check the clamp and the cable back to the board, and note the result on your certificate. A buried rod can corrode or its connection can work loose over the years, and the reading tells us whether it is still doing its job.

  • Electrode resistance measured
  • Clamp and cable inspected
  • RCD cover on every circuit
  • Reading recorded on the certificate

Look outside, close to where the electricity supply enters the house. Rods often sit under a small inspection cover or tucked into a flower bed. The green and yellow earthing cable from the board or meter area leads towards it. Some rods are buried out of sight entirely, and if you cannot find yours, we will trace it on the day.

Yes. What matters on a TT supply is that every circuit is protected by an RCD, which a dual RCD board provides. Depending on the layout, we may also fit a time delayed RCD at the incoming end so the main switch and tails are covered too. Fitting RCBOs on every way instead starts at £625, and we explain which of the two suits your home better.

On a TT installation the rod is part of your own electrical installation, so looking after it is the owner's responsibility. The network's equipment ends at the sealed cut-out, and the meter belongs to your energy supplier. That is why we test the rod with every board change and record the reading, so you know where you stand.
