Period cottages and later infill

Prinsted is a compact place, and much of its character comes from the older cottages and houses along the lanes that lead down towards the water. Many of these were standing long before mains electricity arrived, so their wiring has been added and altered over several generations. Later homes have filled gaps over the years. In the oldest properties, rewireable fuses or early plastic boards with no RCD protection are still a real possibility.

With a replacement board, every circuit gains RCD protection, a Type 2 surge protector goes in, and the whole installation is fully tested. In an older cottage that test matters as much as the board itself, because it shows how the existing wiring is holding up before anything else is planned.

  • Rewireable fuses replaced
  • RCD cover on every circuit
  • Full test of older wiring
  • Surge protection as standard

Careful work in an older setting

Owners of older homes in Prinsted rightly care about how their homes look. A consumer unit change is internal work, so nothing needs altering on the front of the house. Where a board sits somewhere awkward, such as a porch or an entrance hall, we can talk through moving it to a cupboard or an understairs space, which adds £250 when it is done with a new board.

If your cottage is thatched or timber framed, it is worth asking about a board with arc fault detection. AFDDs watch for the tiny sparks that a loose or damaged cable produces and switch the circuit off before a fire can start. RCBO and AFDD boards start from £1,095.

  • No changes to the frontage
  • Relocation add on £250
  • AFDD option for thatch
  • Tidy, discreet cable runs

No. The consumer unit is inside the house, and the meter and the network operator's cut out stay exactly where they are. The only visible change is a new board where the old one was. If you want it moved, we plan the route so cables run through existing voids or neat trunking, and we agree every detail with you before starting.

It depends on the house. AFDDs add the most where a fire would be hardest to contain, such as under a thatched roof, in a timber frame, or where wiring runs hidden through old floors and walls. In many homes, a full RCBO board starting at £625 gives the right level of protection. We set out both options with fixed prices and let you decide.

In a cottage of this size, a board change usually lasts 4 to 6 hours including testing, and you will be without power for much of it. Keeping the fridge and freezer doors shut is usually enough to protect their contents. We switch everything back on before leaving and email your Electrical Installation Certificate within 48 hours.
