Country homes a short drive from Billingshurst

Andrew's Hill is a hamlet, so the homes here are few and individual rather than part of an estate. This close to Billingshurst you might find older cottages alongside later detached houses on generous plots. Whatever the age, the board is often where trouble starts: an old fuse box, a unit with no RCD, or one stretched by decades of new appliances.

Modern kitchens, electric showers and home offices all put more on a board than it was designed for. We look at every circuit, test the whole property and fit a consumer unit sized for how you actually use power today, with spare ways and Type 2 surge protection as standard.

Warning signs you should not ignore

Some fuse box problems can wait for a planned visit; others cannot. Scorch marks on the casing, a burning smell, crackling or buzzing, breakers that feel hot, or a fuse that blows again straight away all point to a fault that needs looking at quickly. These are the calls we try to answer the same day.

While you wait, switch off the main switch if it is safe to reach and the board is not visibly damaged. Do not keep resetting a breaker that trips, and never replace fuse wire with something thicker. Keep a torch handy and leave the board alone until we arrive.

Andrew's Hill questions

Asked in Andrew's Hill

Still not sure?

Call for a straight answer from an installer, not a call centre.

Call 0333 360 8691

Buzzing usually means a loose connection or a failing component arcing inside the board, which can build up heat. If you can do so safely, switch off the main switch and call us. If you cannot turn it off, or you see smoke or scorching, call 999 if there is any fire risk and UK Power Networks on 105 to make the supply safe.

Often, yes, if the problem is the board itself and we have a suitable unit with us. We still test the whole property before the new board goes live, so on a long day the work may run into the evening or need a return visit. Either way, the price is agreed with you before we start.

Not alarmed, but it is worth planning a change. Rewireable fuses give no protection against electric shock, and fuse wire is easily replaced with the wrong size. For £425 a 6 way board with two RCDs puts every circuit under RCD protection, and from £625 a board of RCBOs gives each circuit protection of its own.
