Fuse Box and Consumer Unit Replacement in Sussex
If your Sussex home still runs on a rewireable fuse box or a tired old consumer unit, you are relying on protection designed before hair straighteners, EV chargers and fifty plugged-in devices per household. We replace it with a new consumer unit: a modern, surge protected 18th Edition board, fitted in one day, tested on every circuit and certified under Part P.
Full RCBO board with surge protection, our standard installation
Old fuse boards out, modern protection in
The housing stock across Sussex is beautiful and often old, and its fuse boxes show it. Every week we lift the cupboard door on a Wylex rewireable board in a Victorian terrace in one of the coastal towns, a plastic consumer unit from the eighties in an interwar semi, or a landlord special in a converted flat with three generations of add-on boxes daisy-chained together. We replace old fuse boxes like these every working day, and nothing else.
A fuse box replacement, sometimes called a consumer unit change or fuse board upgrade, swaps all of that for one clean, metal 18th Edition board. Every circuit gets its own properly rated protective device, sockets and bathroom circuits get RCD protection that cuts a fault in milliseconds, and a Type 2 surge protection device shields your electronics as standard. None of it is DIY territory: an electrical fuse box replacement is notifiable work that has to be tested and signed off.
Because replacing fuse boxes is all we do, the job is fixed price, takes a day, and ends with an Electrical Installation Certificate and Building Control notification, not a wave goodbye and a missing invoice.

Why an old fuse box is a safety risk
This is the safety case in plain English. Old boards fail quietly, and the first sign is too often smoke or a shock. Most people replace old fuseboards only after a scare like that; we would much rather you did it before. If you think you have a faulty fuse box or a damaged fuse box right now, one that hums, smells hot or shows burn marks, stop reading and call: we aim to attend emergencies the same day anywhere in Sussex, and within 45 to 90 minutes in Brighton & Hove, where we are based. For everyone else, here is exactly what a modern replacement protects you from.
- No shock protection Rewireable fuses carry on feeding a fault while current flows through a person. An RCD or RCBO disconnects in under 40 milliseconds, fast enough to prevent a fatal electric shock.
- Fire risk from overheating Loose, aged terminals and overrated fuse wire let cables run hot behind plaster. Modern breakers trip at precisely the current the cable can carry, and torque checked terminations remove the hot joints.
- Combustible enclosures Wooden backboards and plastic cases feed a fire that starts inside the board. Current regulations require a non-combustible steel enclosure that contains it instead.
- Wrong fuse wire, no questions asked A rewireable fuse accepts whatever wire is threaded through it. Thirty amp wire on a lighting circuit is a house fire waiting for a nail in the wall. Fixed breakers make that mistake impossible.
- No surge protection Voltage spikes from the grid or nearby lightning quietly destroy boiler PCBs, EV chargers and TVs. Every board we fit across Sussex includes a Type 2 surge protection device as standard.
- Undetected earth faults Many older installations across Sussex have never had their earthing tested, and rural homes on overhead lines often rely on their own TT earth rod. We verify earthing and main bonding to gas and water on every replacement, because protection only works with a path to earth.
The old fuse boxes we replace every week
Nearly every old fuse box replacement we carry out falls into one of four types. Most weeks at least one old fuseboard replacement starts with a landlord's EICR; the rest start with a photo from a worried homeowner.
Rewireable fuse boxes
The classic old fuse box with fuse wire: usually a Wylex, with coloured dots and a card of spare wire balanced on top. Nothing stops the wrong gauge being threaded in, and there is no shock protection at all. Rewireable fuse box replacement is our most common job, and it takes the same single day as any other board.
Ceramic fuse boxes
Cast ceramic carriers in a metal or bakelite case, common in homes wired before the seventies. The ceramic cracks, the contacts pit and overheat, and spares are long out of production. A ceramic fuse box replacement often uncovers perished rubber cables behind the board, which the survey checks for before we book the day.
Boards on wooden backboards
An old style fuse box screwed to a varnished timber backboard, often beside a cast iron main switch and a row of add-on boxes from every decade since. The timber is combustible and the assembly usually predates modern earthing, so the whole lot comes off the wall in one planned visit.
Plastic consumer units
Boards from the eighties through to the 2010s, with proper breakers and sometimes RCDs, but a combustible case. A plastic consumer unit replacement is usually the quickest of the four because the circuits are already separated and labelled. The case becomes steel and the protection comes up to today's standard.
Whichever you recognise, the destination is the same: a steel enclosure fitted in a day, tested and certified. Not sure what you are looking at? Text us a picture for a fixed price the same day.
Everything in the fixed price
Whether we replace or upgrade old fuseboards, one fixed price covers the whole job:
- Full pre-work survey with earth fault loop and bonding checks
- 18th Edition metal consumer unit, sized with spare ways for the future
- Dual RCD, RCBO or AFDD protection to suit your home and budget
- Type 2 surge protection device as standard, not an extra
- New meter tails and main switch, terminations torque checked
- Main bonding to gas and water verified and upgraded where needed
- Every circuit dead tested and live tested, results recorded
- The entire property tested and inspected with every board change, not just the new board
- Typed circuit chart fitted to the board, every way labelled
- Electrical Installation Certificate emailed within 48 hours
- Part P notification to your local council's Building Control
Pick the level of protection
There are three ways to upgrade old consumer units, depending on how far you want to take the protection. Landlords across Sussex choose the full RCBO board most often.
Dual RCD board
from £425Two RCDs covering split banks of circuits. Solid, compliant protection at the friendliest price for flats across Sussex.
Full RCBO board
from £625One device per circuit, so faults stay local and nuisance tripping disappears. Our recommendation for most homes. RCBO boards explained.
AFDD board
from £1,095Adds arc fault detection for the highest available fire protection. Ideal for period property and HMOs. AFDDs explained.

Fuse box replacement FAQs
The clearest signs are a wooden backboard, rewireable fuses with visible fuse wire, a mix of aged brands and add-on boxes, no RCD test button, scorch marks or a fishy burning smell, and breakers that trip for no obvious reason. If your Sussex home still has its original board and was wired before the nineties, it almost certainly predates RCD protection. We will tell you honestly whether it needs replacing, and put it in writing either way.
Since Amendment 3 of the 17th Edition, consumer units in homes must be made of non-combustible material, which in practice means steel. If a loose connection overheats inside the board, a metal enclosure contains the fire instead of feeding it. Older plastic boards do the opposite, which is why they feature so often in fire investigation reports and why an EICR flags them in combination with other defects.
Yes. Much of our work across Sussex is in converted flats, particularly the Regency and Victorian conversions of the coastal towns. We coordinate access with agents and tenants, work around shared risers and landlord supplies, and issue the certificates your freeholder or letting agent will ask for. If the meter position or supply arrangement is unusual, the survey catches it before the day, not during it.
No, only your own supply. We isolate at your meter position, and in most Sussex properties that affects nothing beyond your own front door. Where the cutout or supply equipment is shared or needs the network operator's attention, we spot that at survey and arrange it in advance so the installation day still runs to plan.
There is no law that forces you to change a working board in your own home, so the honest answer is not always. But if yours has rewireable fuses, no RCD test button, or a plastic case that an EICR has flagged, a new fuse box is the most effective single safety upgrade the house can have. Send us a photo and we will give you a straight yes or no, and we say no more often than you might expect.
Working is not the same as safe. An old board carries current happily right up to the moment a fault arrives, and that is exactly when it lets you down: rewireable fuses give no shock protection and react slowly to overloads. We would rather you upgrade old fuse boxes on your own schedule, at a planned price from £425, than in a hurry after a near miss. An EICR from £175 will tell you how urgent yours really is.
Replace it when an EICR grades the installation unsatisfactory, when you have a faulty consumer unit that trips, buzzes or shows scorch marks, or before major work such as a rewire, an extension or an EV charger. Age matters too: boards fitted before RCDs became standard are decades behind current protection. In practice, most customers replace old consumer units when they buy, renovate or let a property in Sussex, because that is when the certificate matters most.
Not automatically. A plastic consumer unit in good condition, with RCD protection and sound connections, is normally recorded as an observation on an EICR rather than a failure. Once anything else needs correcting though, a metal consumer unit upgrade is the sensible fix, because the regulations have required a non-combustible enclosure since 2016. Every plastic fuse box replacement we carry out uses a steel 18th Edition board with a Type 2 surge protection device included.
Strictly speaking, no. The 18th Edition of the Wiring Regulations covers consumer units rather than fuse boxes, but the name has stuck and we know exactly what you mean. Ask us for an 18th Edition fuse box and you will get a steel 18th Edition consumer unit with RCD or RCBO protection and a Type 2 surge protection device built in.
