Mid century homes, first generation boards

Because so much of Small Dole was built in the last century, the electrics tend to be simpler than in a centuries old cottage, but they are no less due for attention. Homes of this age commonly have a board from the 1970s, 80s or 90s, with cartridge fuses or early miniature circuit breakers and either no RCD or one RCD shared across half the house.

Bungalows often have the board in a hall cupboard or high above the front door, so we check access and position from your photos before the day. Moving it somewhere easier to reach, at a sensible height, adds £250 with a new board.

  • Cartridge fuse boards replaced
  • High boards brought within reach
  • Hall cupboard positions assessed
  • RCD protection on every circuit

Solar panels and home batteries

Making room for panels and storage

Houses and bungalows with a good expanse of roof are natural candidates for solar panels, and a battery to store the daytime output is now a common addition. Both need their own protected circuit, a means of isolation and correct warning labels at the consumer unit, and an installer will want a board that meets current regulations before connecting anything to it.

We fit a board with spare ways for the inverter and battery circuits and Type 2 surge protection as standard. If panels are already on the roof and wired into an old fuse box, we bring them onto the new board properly and record them on your certificate.

  • Spare ways for inverter and battery
  • Existing PV moved onto the new board
  • Dual supply labels fitted
  • Surge protection included

Call for a straight answer from an installer, not a call centre.

Call 0333 360 8691

Not always, but often. If your board has no RCD protection, no spare way or is an older plastic unit, the solar installer may ask for it to be upgraded first. We can tell which applies from pictures of your consumer unit and meter, and the board we fit leaves space for the inverter and a battery later on.

Yes. Boards fixed high over a doorway are awkward to reach when something trips, especially at night. We can move it to a hall cupboard or a lower wall position as part of the replacement for an extra £250, leaving the meter where it is and running new tails to the board.

A Type 2 surge protector comes with every board we install. It limits voltage spikes from lightning on the network or large switching events before they reach televisions, routers, boiler controls and inverters. If your board is fairly new but lacks surge protection, it can be retrofitted on its own for £165.
