Clearing the way for a smart meter
A smart meter appointment can end early if the engineer finds something at the meter position they are not permitted to work around. Typical reasons include tails that are too thin or show signs of heat, no main earth, a cracked board casing, or a backing board that might contain asbestos. Until that is put right, the new meter stays in the van.
The cut-out and main fuse belong to UK Power Networks and the meter to your supplier, but the tails and the consumer unit are yours, and that is the part we sort out. Once the new board and tails are fitted and certified, you simply ring your supplier and rebook the smart meter.
