Houses from many decades

Old village cottages and later infill houses

Like many Wealden villages, Kirdford mixes older cottages near its centre with homes built through the twentieth century and since. That spread of ages shows up in the cupboard where the board lives: rewireable fuse carriers in some houses, early plastic consumer units in others, and split load boards that leave the lighting circuits without any RCD protection at all.

We look at the board, the meter tails and the main earth together before we quote. Starting at £425, a dual RCD board puts every circuit behind RCD protection; a full RCBO board, priced from £625, goes further and gives each circuit its own device, so one fault no longer darkens half the house.

  • Rewireable fuses retired
  • Split load boards replaced
  • Meter tails checked for size
  • Every circuit RCD protected

When the heating moves onto the board

Where a Kirdford home has no mains gas, the heating has usually come from oil, LPG or electric storage heaters. As oil boilers reach the end of their lives, more owners are looking at air source heat pumps, and a heat pump, its controls and any backup immersion heater all need properly protected circuits on the consumer unit.

Before a heat pump goes in, we check the main fuse rating and the size of the meter tails, then fit a board with ways set aside for the new circuits. If the supply itself needs increasing, that is a job for UK Power Networks, and we explain exactly what to ask them for.

Getting to you

Reaching Kirdford from the coast

From the coast, Kirdford is a fair drive inland. We usually travel by way of Pulborough and Wisborough Green, then follow the lanes into the village, so it is a straightforward trip for our installers. You choose the date once a fixed price has been agreed from pictures of the board. When a failed board has left the house with no power, phone us and we will do all we can to get there that day.

Kirdford questions

Still not sure?

Call for a straight answer from an installer, not a call centre.

Usually, yes. Older storage heater installations sometimes have a second small board fed from the off peak side of the meter, so the heaters only charge overnight. We check how yours is wired, keep the off peak circuits switching as they should, and either renew that second board or bring the circuits onto the main one where the meter arrangement allows.

Not for a straight board change. The new unit connects to your existing supply, and the main fuse in the cut-out belongs to UK Power Networks. It only comes into question when you add large loads such as a heat pump or car charger. We work out the likely demand and tell you whether an upgrade request is worth making.

It can do. Main protective bonding links incoming metal services to the main earthing terminal, and a metal oil supply pipe entering the house may need to be included alongside water and any gas. We check this during the full test that comes with every board change, and fit or upgrade the bonding where the regulations call for it.
