Rural homes, older boards

What tends to hide behind the cupboard door

Homes in a small rural settlement such as Shover's Green tend to have been cared for house by house over the years, never brought up to date all at once. That means we can find almost anything on the wall: rewireable fuse carriers, a metal clad main switch, a mixture of old and new units, or cables in the old rubber insulation that came before PVC.

None of this automatically means the house needs a full rewire. Very often the circuits test well enough to keep, and a new consumer unit with RCD or RCBO protection makes a real difference to safety. Where testing shows that a circuit is not fit to keep, we tell you clearly.

  • Rewireable fuses replaced
  • Metal clad switches removed
  • Old cable types identified
  • Test results explained

Old equipment needs careful hands

Fuse boxes from the middle of the twentieth century were made with materials no longer used. Some older fuse carriers and boards contain small asbestos flash pads or backing material, which are harmless left alone but should not be broken, sanded or snapped apart. Bare wooden backboards and early plastic enclosures also fall short of today's rules for consumer units.

We remove old equipment carefully and in one piece wherever we can, and if we suspect asbestos we stop, explain what we have seen and agree the safe next step with you. Current regulations call for a non-combustible metal enclosure, so that is what the new board is housed in, and a Type 2 surge protector comes fitted as part of it.

How we get to Shover's Green

Our route out to Shover's Green runs via Heathfield and Wadhurst, and the journey itself is never charged for. We price from photos so you know the cost before anyone sets off. Should the old board fail, a fuse keep blowing or a smell of burning appear, turn everything off at the main switch and ring us: getting someone out that same day is the aim.

Rewireable fuses protect cables, but they do not protect people from electric shock the way an RCD does, and the wrong wire is easily fitted after a fuse blows. They are not illegal in an owner occupied home, but they fall well short of current standards. A new consumer unit from £425 adds RCD protection to every circuit.

In some older fuse boxes, yes, usually as small flash pads inside the fuse carriers or as a backing board. It is only a risk if disturbed. Send us clear photos with the carriers in place and we can tell you what we expect. If we have any doubt on the day, we stop and discuss it with you before continuing.

Not necessarily. Many older homes have wiring that tests satisfactorily and can stay. We test every circuit as part of the board change, and if one fails, we explain why and what the options are. You decide, and we never start extra work without agreeing it with you first.
