If it has no surge protection device, we can usually add one for £165. We would only suggest replacing it if it is full, damaged or missing something that cannot be added.
Both are safe and compliant. On a dual RCD board the circuits are split into two groups, so one fault can switch off half the house. On a full RCBO board each circuit trips on its own, which is easier to live with and makes faults simpler to trace. For a busy family home, the extra cost is often worth it.
For a straightforward replacement, most boards are fitted in four to six hours, and the supply is off for much of that time. A surge protection retrofit on an existing board takes far less.
