Rural hamlet in Woodmancote parish

Fuse Box Replacement in Blackstone

Farmland west of Burgess Hill is the setting for Blackstone, a hamlet in Woodmancote parish. A fixed price covers the fuse box change, a test of the whole house and a close look at the earth, which matters because rural supplies often rely on a rod in the ground.

Few houses, each one different

No two Blackstone boards are alike

A hamlet has no estate of matching houses with matching fuse boxes. Around Blackstone you are more likely to find cottages and farmhouses that different owners have altered over many decades. The board might be a wooden-backed fuse box, a 1990s split-load unit, or a newer consumer unit fitted without the rest of the installation ever being brought up to date.

That is why we test every circuit as part of the change. Faults such as borrowed neutrals, or a shed fed from a socket circuit, often stay hidden until modern RCD protection goes in. Finding them during the job means the new board settles in quietly instead of tripping for no apparent reason.

  • Circuits traced and tested
  • Borrowed neutrals tracked down
  • Shed and barn feeds sorted out
  • Clear labels on every way

Checking the earth on a country supply

Out in the farmland around Blackstone, homes are often fed by overhead lines on poles, and where the network does not provide an earth terminal the house depends on its own electrode. This is called a TT system. A rod that has corroded, or a clamp that has worked loose, can leave the whole installation without a dependable path to earth.

With every board change we measure the electrode resistance and confirm the readings suit the RCDs on the new board. If the rod needs replacing or a second one adding, we tell you and agree it before going further. The Type 2 surge device included with every board is particularly worthwhile on an overhead line.

  • Electrode resistance measured
  • Rod and clamp inspected
  • RCDs matched to a TT supply
  • Surge device on the new board

Yes. TT earthing is normal in the countryside and a modern consumer unit works well with it. We test the rod, check the earthing conductor and its clamp, and choose RCD or RCBO protection that will disconnect quickly enough if a fault occurs. All of the readings go on the certificate we email within 48 hours.

Not at all. We charge nothing for travel anywhere in Sussex, so a lane, a farm track or a gate to open makes no difference to the price. It helps if you tell us about access when you book, such as a gate code, a narrow turning or where the van can park, so the installer arrives ready to start.

Yes. An electrical installation condition report includes measuring how well your earth is working, along with testing every circuit. On its own the report costs £175 to £350, the figure set by the size of the property. If you decide to go ahead with a new board at the same time, the report is just £99.
