Fuse Box Replacement in Telscombe

Telscombe parish takes in Telscombe Cliffs and East Saltdean on the coast and the small downland village of Telscombe itself. Homes here face weather straight off the sea, and older fuse boxes do not always cope well with it. We fit modern consumer units at fixed prices, tested and certified.

Bungalows, semis and the odd flint cottage

East Saltdean and Telscombe Cliffs are mainly residential, with a large share of bungalows, chalet bungalows and detached and semi-detached houses built from the interwar years onwards. Many sit on roads climbing from the coast road towards the Downs. Telscombe village is quite different: a small cluster of older flint and brick buildings tucked into a downland valley and reached by a narrow lane.

On the coastal estates the typical picture is a board that was replaced once, often decades ago, without RCD protection on every circuit. In older village properties the wiring and supply arrangements can be much older, and they need a closer look before anything is connected to a new unit.

  • Interwar and post-war bungalows
  • Chalet bungalows with loft rooms
  • Semis on the hillside roads
  • Older village properties
  • RCD cover on every circuit
  • Full test before sign off

Family lets and homes near the sea

Rental property in Telscombe is mostly houses and bungalows let to families, with some flats along the coast road. Sitting on the edge of Brighton, the area attracts tenants who want more space and sea air without moving far from the city, and some homes close to the cliffs are let for short holiday stays during the summer as well.

Whether it is a long let or a holiday let, a consumer unit coded C2 on an EICR needs dealing with. We replace the board, test the property and add an EICR for £99, or, if the board itself is fine, carry out a standalone EICR from £175 to £350 depending on the size of the property.

  • Long lets and holiday lets
  • C2 codes on boards cleared
  • EICR £99 with a board change
  • Standalone EICR from £175

Salt air

Coastal exposure and your consumer unit

Homes along the clifftop in Telscombe Cliffs and East Saltdean take wind and salt spray from the Channel. Salt air speeds up corrosion on exposed metal, and it can affect anything electrical that sits outside or in a damp, poorly sealed space: meter boxes on outside walls, garage boards, outdoor sockets and garden lights, and the terminals and fixings inside them.

When we replace a board here, we look at where it is and what feeds it. A consumer unit in a damp garage or porch may be better moved inside, which we can do for an extra £250 at the same visit. External circuits are tested and their accessories checked for corrosion.

  • Garage boards checked for damp
  • Corroded terminals identified
  • Outdoor sockets tested
  • Board moved indoors if needed
  • Relocation for £250 extra
  • Meter tails inspected

Same day call outs in Telscombe

Telscombe is right on the edge of Brighton, between Saltdean and Peacehaven on the A259, so it is one of the easiest places for us to reach. If your power has gone off and the trip switch will not reset, or you can see scorching or hear crackling at the board, call us between 8am and 8pm, seven days a week. We will aim to have an installer with you the same day where possible.

If the fault turns out to be the incoming supply rather than your board, we will tell you and point you to UK Power Networks, who run the local network. Their power cut number is 105, and the call is free.

East Saltdean is in Telscombe parish and Lewes District, even though it shares a BN2 postcode with Saltdean on the Brighton side. For us it makes no difference: we cover both sides of the boundary at the same fixed prices. The council area only matters for things like Building Control, and we handle the Part P notification for you.

Damp and salt air are hard on consumer units, so it is worth considering, especially close to the cliffs. We can move the board into the house as part of the replacement for an extra £250, where there is a sensible route for the cables. If moving it is not practical, we fit the new unit in the best available spot and make sure it is suitable for the location.

It may be. Older rural properties sometimes have overhead supplies and rely on their own earth electrode rather than an earth provided by the network. We check the earthing arrangement at the start of every job, test any electrode, and tell you if anything needs improving before the new board is switched on.

Every board we fit includes Type 2 surge protection anyway, so you do not need to weigh it up. Surge protection helps limit damage from voltage spikes, whether they come from lightning activity or switching on the network. If your existing board is modern and in good condition, we can retrofit surge protection on its own for £165.

The five-yearly EICR rule in the private rented sector regulations is aimed at tenancies rather than short holiday stays, but some insurers, agents and letting platforms ask for a recent report, and it is the simplest way to show the electrics are safe for guests. A standalone EICR costs £175 to £350, or £99 when added to a board change.
