Consumer unit work in Arundel and BN18
For period properties we often recommend a full RCBO board from £625 so a single fault never blacks out the whole house. Simpler homes suit a dual RCD board from £425. Surge protection is included either way.

Old town cottages and surrounding villages
The town climbs the hill from the River Arun to the castle and cathedral, and its streets, including the High Street, Tarrant Street and Maltravers Street, are lined with Georgian and Victorian houses, flint cottages and older buildings with later fronts. Many have thick walls, cellars and awkward cable routes. Beyond the town, BN18 covers villages such as Walberton, Yapton, Ford and Slindon, with a wider mix of cottages and twentieth century homes.
In old town houses the fuse box is often in a cellar, under the stairs or in a tight hall cupboard, and the wiring may span several eras. In the villages, older properties can be on overhead supplies, sometimes with TT earthing that needs its own checks when the board is changed.
- Boards in cellars and under stairs
- Mixed era wiring tested fully
- TT earthing checked in villages
- RCBO boards for period homes
- Tidy work around original features
- Certificate within 48 hours

Holiday cottages and visitor accommodation
Arundel draws visitors all year for the castle, the cathedral, the wetland centre and the river, and a good share of rented property in the town is holiday lets and small guest accommodation rather than long term tenancies. Owners need an installation that is safe, certified and does not trip and leave guests in the dark.
We schedule replacements between bookings wherever possible and can add an EICR for £99 at the same visit. Long term landlords in the town and surrounding villages get the same service, with standalone EICRs from £175.
- Work booked between guests
- Certificates for insurers and platforms
- EICR £99 with a new board
- RCBOs reduce nuisance tripping
- Key safe access welcome
- Fixed price before we start

Respecting a historic town
Much of Arundel lies within a conservation area and the town has a large number of listed buildings. A like for like consumer unit replacement inside a home does not normally need listed building consent, but any new cable runs, surface trunking or holes through historic fabric deserve care, and for listed buildings it is wise to check with Arun District Council's conservation team before anything visible changes.
We aim to reuse existing cable routes, keep the new board in the same position where it is practical, and avoid chasing into old plaster or panelling. If relocation is unavoidable we talk it through first so you can check whether consent is needed.
- Existing cable routes reused
- No chasing into historic plaster
- Board kept in place where possible
- Discreet metal enclosures
- Advice on when to check consent
- Dust sheets and careful clean up
A failed board in Arundel
If the power has gone off and will not reset, or your fuse box is hot, buzzing or smells of burning, call us. Arundel is reached easily along the A27 from Brighton & Hove, and we aim to be with you the same day where possible. If you are safely able to, switch off at the main switch and leave the board alone.
We find the fault first. If the board needs replacing, we quote a fixed price on the spot and, in most cases, can fit it on the same or the next visit.

Fuse box questions from Arundel
Call for a straight answer from an installer, not a call centre. No pressure, no hard sell.
Call 0333 360 8691Replacing a consumer unit in the same position, using existing cables, is generally treated as maintenance and does not normally need listed building consent. New visible cable runs or changes to historic fabric might. If anything beyond a straight swap is needed, we explain exactly what will change so you can check with Arun District Council's conservation officer first.
Not in itself, as long as the space is dry and accessible. Cellars in older Arundel houses can be damp, so we check the condition of the board, tails and cables there. If damp is an issue, or the board is hard to reach in an emergency, moving it upstairs adds £250 to the board price.
It might. Some rural properties around BN18 have TT earthing, meaning the house relies on its own earth rod rather than an earth from UK Power Networks. We test the rod as part of the job, and a TT installation needs RCD protection on every circuit, which our boards provide as standard.
Usually a full RCBO board. Each circuit has its own protection, so if a guest's appliance trips a socket circuit, the lights and heating stay on. An 8 way RCBO board is £625 and a 10 to 12 way is £695, which suits most cottages in the town.
Some Arundel streets are narrow and parking is limited, especially at busy visitor times. We just need to know beforehand, so we can plan where to park and bring what we need in one trip. It does not change the price.
