Flint, brick and age

Old cottages in a downland valley

Singleton's older houses are built in the flint and brick found throughout the villages of this part of the Downs, and many have stood for a very long time. Their electrics are far younger than their walls, yet plenty of installations still date back decades, extended in stages and fed from a fuse box squeezed into whatever corner was free.

In cottages like these, the board position is usually set by where the supply comes in. We keep the new board there where we can, which avoids cutting into thick walls, and route any new tails neatly. If the old position is genuinely unsafe or impractical, moving it with the new board adds £250.

Old meter boards and handling them safely

In older homes the meter and the cut-out are often fixed to a dark backing board that has been in place for decades. Some boards of that age contain asbestos. Left alone and undamaged they are low risk, but they should not be drilled, cut or broken up, and nobody can confirm what a board is made of just by looking at it.

We never drill into an old meter board. The new consumer unit goes on its own fixing, and the meter tails are renewed where needed. If the cut-out or meter board itself needs changing, that is work for UK Power Networks and your energy supplier, and we tell you exactly who to contact.

Getting to you

From the A27 to Singleton, avoiding race days

We drive along the A27 to Chichester and north on the A286, which runs straight through the village. Nothing is added to the bill for the drive out to Singleton. Goodwood's big event days can slow the roads around here, so we plan around them where we can. For bookings, photos by text are ideal, but a failed board calls for a phone call, and we will attempt to get there that day.

Yes, as long as it is not disturbed. We fix the new consumer unit independently on a sound section of wall and do not drill or cut the old backing board. If you are renovating and want it gone altogether, contact UK Power Networks and your energy supplier, as they look after the cut-out and the meter fixed to it.

Not at all. RCD protection for most socket circuits only became a general requirement in the 2008 wiring regulations, and many older installations were never upgraded. It does not mean the wiring is dangerous, but nothing would cut the power quickly if someone touched a live part. A new board brings RCD protection to every circuit.

Only a little. The meter tails then run through the wall to the consumer unit inside, and we check they are the right size and properly protected. Older tails are often thinner than today's standard, so we usually renew them with the board. The meter and cut-out inside the box remain the responsibility of your supplier and UK Power Networks.
