Country lanes, scattered homes

Small numbers, plenty of variety

Homes around Three Oaks are spread along country lanes rather than packed into estates, so no two boards are likely to be the same. Older houses may still have a wooden-backed fuse board or rewireable fuses, while others were updated decades ago with an early plastic consumer unit that leaves some circuits without RCD protection.

We look at what you have, then recommend the simplest board that protects every circuit properly. A modest cottage may need nothing more than a six way dual RCD unit, priced from £425. Larger houses with a garage or outbuildings to feed get more room from a full RCBO board offering 10 to 12 ways for £695.

  • Rewireable fuses replaced
  • RCD protection on every circuit
  • Spare ways left for the future

Testing a TT earth properly

Rural homes like those around Three Oaks are often fed by overhead lines, and many have no earth provided by the network. In its place, a metal rod sunk into the soil provides the earth, which is known as TT earthing. That arrangement only works safely if the rod is in good condition and the RCDs on the board trip quickly when they should.

Every board change here includes a resistance reading on the rod itself, plus a look at the earthing conductor and the clamp that holds it. If the readings show the rod is no longer doing its job, we tell you before going any further and explain what replacing it involves, so the new board is not relying on a poor earth.

  • Earth electrode resistance measured
  • Earthing clamp and conductor checked
  • Fast-tripping RCD protection
  • Readings recorded on your certificate
Getting to you

Reaching Three Oaks

We set out from Brighton & Hove, travel along the coast to Hastings and then take the lanes north of the A259. None of that mileage appears on your bill. Pictures of the board are enough to set a fixed quote, after which you pick the date. Lost power because of a fault? Phone while the lines are open and we aim to reach Three Oaks that same day.

Look near the meter for a green and yellow cable that leaves the board area and disappears through the wall or floor, rather than clamping onto the incoming supply cable. A photo of your meter position usually tells us. We confirm the arrangement on the day and test it either way.

Possibly, but more often an outside light, socket or buried cable is letting in water, and the RCD is rightly detecting it. We track down the faulty circuit during testing. A new board with RCBOs means that kind of fault only switches off one circuit instead of the whole house.

No. Our fixed prices are identical across Sussex, and travelling out to you costs nothing. If your supply needs extra work, such as a new earth rod or longer meter tails, we tell you exactly what it is and what it costs before anything is done.
