Turning a patchwork into one consumer unit

Homes in small rural hamlets were seldom wired in one go. Over the decades a shower, a cooker, an immersion heater or a garage might each have gained its own fused switch or mini board, until the meter cupboard holds three or four separate units. Each may have different protection, or none, and isolating the whole house safely becomes guesswork.

We combine these into a single board wherever the cables allow, give every circuit RCD protection and label each one clearly. There is usually room for everything on a 10 way board with dual RCDs at £495, or you can choose full RCBO protection if you would rather every circuit stood alone.

  • Separate units brought together
  • One main switch for the house
  • Each circuit clearly labelled
  • Matching protection throughout

Earth electrodes in dry, sandy ground

The countryside around Midhurst sits largely on sandy soils, and Stedham with Iping parish includes open heathland commons. Where a rural home relies on its own earth rod, which is common on overhead supplies, dry sandy ground can make it harder for that rod to achieve a low resistance, and readings can rise noticeably during a long dry summer.

Testing the earth electrode's resistance is part of every board change, along with checks on the rod, its clamp and its cable. If the reading is high, we explain the options, such as an additional or deeper rod, and the protection on the new board is chosen to suit a TT supply.

  • Electrode resistance measured
  • Rod, clamp and cable checked
  • Options explained if readings are high
  • Protection chosen for TT earthing

Quags Corner questions

Asked in Quags Corner

Still not sure?

Call for a straight answer from an installer, not a call centre.

Call 0333 360 8691

It is a metal rod sunk into the soil close to the house, which gives your installation a connection to earth of its own. You may spot a small inspection cover outside, or a green and yellow cable from the meter area heading through an outside wall. If the network provides the earth instead, the cable connects at the sealed cut-out. Photos help us confirm which.

In most homes, yes. As long as the existing cables are long enough and in sound condition, they can be brought into a single consumer unit with one main switch. Where a cable will not quite reach, we extend it with a proper, accessible joint rather than leaving a separate unit in place.

Usually not. We can usually text back a fixed price once we have clear pictures of the board, meter and any extra fuse units. If something in the pictures is unclear, we will ask a follow up question or, occasionally, suggest a short visit first. The price we confirm is the price you pay.
