Older Patching homes and their wiring

Patching is mostly older cottages and individual houses rather than estates, set along lanes at the foot of the Downs. In homes like these the fuse box may already have been swapped once, but the cables behind it can be decades older than the board itself. A replacement is a sensible moment to find out exactly what condition those circuits are in.

Where a cottage has only a few circuits, dual RCD protection at £425 upwards is often all it needs. Bigger houses tend to go for full RCBO protection, which starts at £625, as do owners who want each circuit guarded individually so one fault cannot black out several rooms together. Either way the price is fixed before we arrive.

Getting the board ready for a heat pump

Villages at the foot of the Downs are not always on mains gas, and homes heated by oil or LPG are increasingly looking at air source heat pumps instead. A heat pump adds a substantial new circuit, and the installer will usually want a modern board with a spare way to connect it to. Sorting the board out first removes that obstacle.

When we survey, tell us what you are planning: a heat pump, an immersion upgrade, solar panels or an EV charger. We will size the board with spare capacity and check the main fuse and supply cables, so the next project does not mean another board change a year from now.

  • Spare ways for new circuits
  • Heat pump ready layout
  • Main fuse and tails checked
  • Planned around future loads

Patching questions

Asked in Patching

Still not sure?

Call for a straight answer from an installer, not a call centre.

Call 0333 360 8691

It can be, if we know about it. We fit boards with spare ways and can leave one ready for a heat pump circuit, then check whether your main fuse and meter tails can carry the extra load. If the supply itself needs upgrading, that is arranged through UK Power Networks and we can tell you what to ask for.

Not always. Plenty of older homes have wiring that tests perfectly well and only need a new board. Where cables are very old, such as rubber insulated or lead sheathed, they are often past their safe life and should be replaced. We test first and tell you honestly which situation you are in.

Usually, yes. Send three pictures by text: the fuse box close up, the same box from further back so we can see where it sits, and the electricity meter. Back comes a fixed price, which the installer confirms on arrival once the installation has been checked.
