A village that grew in stages

Post-war houses, bungalows and newer builds

Like many villages around Burgess Hill, Wivelsfield Green has housing that is likely a mix of older cottages, post-war houses, bungalows and more recent homes. That spread shows up in the boards we expect to meet: a few original fuse boxes, plenty of 1970s to 1990s split load units, and plastic consumer units from the early 2000s.

One picture of the board shows us which of these groups yours belongs to. For a smaller home, dual RCD protection at £425 upwards often does the job well, whereas a family house with a busy kitchen, a loft room and outdoor sockets is usually better off with full RCBO protection, which for 8 ways starts at £625.

Why a plastic consumer unit may be due for replacement

Plenty of homes in a village like Wivelsfield Green had a board fitted in the 1990s or 2000s that looks modern but sits in a plastic case. Since January 2016 the wiring regulations have required any new consumer unit in a home to have a non-combustible enclosure, which in practice means steel, a change prompted by fires starting inside plastic units.

A plastic board is not illegal and does not have to come out just because of its case. But if it also leaves some circuits without RCD protection, shows scorching or keeps tripping, the argument for a steel board with RCBOs and surge protection is strong. We tell you honestly which applies.

Still not sure?

Call for a straight answer from an installer, not a call centre.

No. The 2016 rule applies to new installations, so an existing plastic board is not automatically unsafe. What matters is its condition and the protection it gives. If testing shows every circuit has working RCD protection and nothing is overheating, we will say so. If not, we quote for a steel replacement and explain each reason.

Often they do. The meter tails on older installations can be undersized or have tired insulation, and a new board needs tails in good order, so replacing them is part of a normal job. The cut-out belongs to UK Power Networks and the meter to your energy supplier, so any problem with those is reported to them.

We normally start in the morning, so most of the work happens in daylight. A board change takes four to six hours including testing every circuit, which means the power is usually back by mid to late afternoon. We only switch off once everything is ready, and we tell you before we do.
