Cottages and houses beneath the Downs

Warningcamp is a quiet, spread out village between the Arun water meadows and the rising downland, with a modest number of homes. Expect a mix of older cottages and individual houses from later years. In a village this size each property tends to have its own electrical story, so we treat every board as a one off rather than assuming a standard layout.

Older rural homes often turn up rewireable fuses, different cable types where rooms were added, and lighting circuits with no earth conductor. All of it gets tested and honestly recorded on the certificate, and the metal consumer unit we fit carries Type 2 surge protection at no extra cost.

Heat pumps, electric boilers and bigger loads

Where a village home has no mains gas, heating usually comes from oil, LPG or electricity, and many owners are now weighing up an air source heat pump. A heat pump or an electric boiler puts far more demand on the consumer unit than a gas boiler ever did, and old boards rarely have the capacity or the spare ways for it.

If your Warningcamp home is off the gas grid, tell us what heating you have and what you are planning. We can lay out the new board with dedicated ways for a heat pump or electric heating, and note the main fuse rating so your heating installer knows exactly what they are working with.

  • Ways reserved for a heat pump
  • Electric heating on its own circuit
  • Main fuse rating noted
  • Board sized for future loads

It usually makes sense to do things in the right order. A new consumer unit laid out with a dedicated way for the heat pump avoids squeezing another circuit onto an old board. We record the main fuse rating and earthing details on the paperwork, which helps your heat pump installer with their design.

Older lighting circuits were often wired without an earth conductor. It is not unusual, but it means metal light fittings and metal switch plates should not be used on those circuits. We test, record it on the certificate and fit RCD protection to the circuit, which reduces the risk. Rewiring the lighting can be quoted separately if you want it.

Yes. With any board change, a full Electrical Installation Condition Report is £99 on top, compared with £175 to £350 on its own. It is useful if you are letting, selling or simply want a written picture of the wiring beyond the board. As for the new consumer unit itself, the Electrical Installation Certificate covers it and is emailed to you no later than 48 hours afterwards.
