Where the Downs meet Eastbourne

Fuse Box Replacement in Willingdon

Willingdon keeps its old village core beneath the Downs, south of Polegate, while newer roads carry it down to meet Eastbourne. Busy family homes here are asking more of their fuse boxes every year. We fit modern consumer units at a fixed price, with surge protection and a full test.

Village core and later roads

Two kinds of Willingdon home

Around the church, Willingdon still has cottages and houses of genuine age, but most of the parish is twentieth century: detached houses, semis and bungalows built as the village spread towards Eastbourne. In those later homes the board is usually under the stairs, in a hall cupboard or in an integral garage, and it was sized for a household with far fewer appliances.

Kitchen extensions, electric showers, home offices and garden rooms all add circuits. When there is no spare way left, extra circuits end up spurred or doubled up, which is hard to test and easy to overload. There is room to grow either way: a dual RCD board of 10 ways costs £495, and £575 buys a high integrity board with 12 ways.

Planning for an EV charger

Plenty of Willingdon homes have off road parking, which makes a home charge point an obvious next step. A 7kW charger draws around 32 amps for hours at a time, on top of everything else in the house. Before one is fitted, the consumer unit, the main fuse and the earthing all need to be up to it, and an old board often is not.

If a charger is on your list, say so when you ask for a quote. We will fit a board with a spare way and suitable protection for it, and check whether your supply is PME, which affects how the charger has to be earthed. Your charge point installer then has a clean, labelled board to connect to.

Same day help in Willingdon

We come along the A27 to Polegate, then turn south on the Eastbourne road into Willingdon. A board change is usually a 4 to 6 hour job, which is why we book it as one morning start. Should the power go, or the board feel hot to the touch, phone us and we aim to be at your door the same day.

It depends on the board's age, whether it has a spare way with the right protection, and the size of your main fuse. Older boards rarely tick all three. From pictures of the board and the area around the meter, we can say whether it can be adapted or needs replacing first.

It usually makes sense to do it in the same project. The new kitchen will bring an oven, hob and extra sockets, and your electrician will need spare ways to connect them. Fitting the new consumer unit early means the extension is wired straight onto modern protection rather than squeezed onto the old board.

It covers the board itself, the Type 2 surge protection fitted in it, removal of the old unit, a test and inspection of the whole installation, Part P notification to Building Control, and an Electrical Installation Certificate emailed to you inside 48 hours. Nothing is added for travel either. Any extras are agreed with you before we start.
