Between the shingle and the Levels

Fuse Box Replacement in Pevensey Bay

Pevensey Bay strings out along the shingle north east of Eastbourne, with the flat Pevensey Levels behind it. We replace fuse boxes in its bungalows, chalets and seafront houses with modern consumer units, and we think about where a board is best placed on such low ground.

Bungalows by the beach

Single storey living on the shingle bank

Much of Pevensey Bay is single storey: bungalows and chalet bungalows along the coast road and the roads behind it, with houses facing straight onto the beach. Some began as seaside holiday places before becoming year round homes. In a bungalow the board is often in a hall cupboard or by the front door, sometimes quite low down.

Bungalows are usually straightforward to work in, because the loft gives an easy route for cables. That makes moving a board to a better position far less disruptive than in a house with two floors. Prices begin at £425 for dual RCD and £625 for full RCBO, with surge protection part of both.

Placing a board with flooding in mind

Pevensey Bay sits on low land between the sea and the Levels, protected by its shingle bank. Where flood risk is a real concern, it makes little sense to put a brand new consumer unit at skirting height. Guidance on flood resilient homes recommends keeping the board, meter and sockets above the likely flood level where that is practical.

If your home has taken on water in the past, tell us when you send photos. Water that reached sockets or back boxes can leave damage that is not visible, and our testing is designed to find it. Adding a full EICR to the board change costs £99.

  • Board height reviewed
  • Flood history taken into account
  • Hidden water damage tested for
  • EICR £99 alongside a board
Getting to you

Getting out to Pevensey Bay

From Brighton & Hove we head east on the A27 past Lewes and Polegate to Pevensey, then down to the coast. Send photos by text and you can have a fixed price along with dates to pick from. A board that has failed or smells of burning is different: switch off at the main switch if it is safe, then phone us. Our aim then is a same day visit.

Yes. Moving the board during a replacement adds £250 to the board price. We extend the circuits to the new position, fit the consumer unit there and test everything. The meter and incoming cable belong to your supplier and UK Power Networks, so if those need raising we will tell you who to contact.

Yes: Brighton & Hove is our base, and from there we cover the whole of Sussex. The journey is on us, so a Pevensey Bay board costs the same as one in Brighton, starting at £425. Because the journey is a long one, we load the van for your particular job from your photos, so it can be finished in one visit.

The whole property. Every board change includes inspection and testing of all the circuits it supplies, because a new consumer unit is only as safe as the wiring behind it. Those results are recorded on your Electrical Installation Certificate, which is emailed to you no later than 48 hours afterwards, and we notify Building Control of the work under Part P.
