Inside Blackboys homes: what the wiring tends to look like

Blackboys has houses from many periods. Older homes may have had their wiring renewed once or twice, with the fuse box replaced or moved along the way, while later houses often still have the consumer unit they were built with. In both, plastic enclosures, gaps in RCD protection and boards with no spare ways are the usual reasons to upgrade.

Two boards cover most houses in the village: dual RCD, from £425, and full RCBO, from £625. RCBOs suit households where one faulty circuit taking out half the house would be a real problem, for example where someone works from home, relies on medical equipment or keeps a freezer in an outbuilding.

Arc fault protection for older timber buildings

An arc fault detection device, or AFDD, watches a circuit for the electrical signature of arcing: the small sparks from a loose terminal, a nail through a cable or a crushed flex. Ordinary breakers and RCDs are not designed to spot these. The wiring regulations now recommend AFDDs in homes, and they make particular sense where the building itself is made of combustible materials, as a timber framed house is.

Adding AFDDs to an RCBO board brings the price to £1,095 with 10 ways and £1,295 with 14. Because that costs more than a standard board, we go through where it genuinely earns its keep in your house and where an RCBO board at £625 would serve just as well.

No. In ordinary houses the wiring regulations recommend AFDDs rather than require them. They are required in certain buildings, such as houses in multiple occupation and care homes. For a timber framed house or one with older wiring they are well worth considering, but a properly installed RCBO board is still a sound, compliant choice.

Only if the board can take them. They have to be compatible with the make of consumer unit and there must be room for them. If you think you might want arc fault protection in future, say so before we choose the board, so we fit one that leaves that door open.

Some appliances with brushed motors, such as older power tools or vacuum cleaners, produce electrical noise that can resemble arcing, but modern devices are designed to tell the difference. Unwanted tripping is uncommon, and many AFDDs show which type of fault made them trip, which helps track the problem down quickly.
