Bungalows and family houses

Twentieth century homes, added to since

Wannock's housing is largely twentieth century: bungalows alongside detached and semi-detached family houses. Homes from that era were wired for a modest number of circuits. Since then, plenty have gained a conservatory, a loft conversion, a rear extension or a garage turned into a room, and each one asked a little more of the original board.

We check how each addition was connected. Spurs taken from a ring, a cooker circuit borrowed for a utility room or a long run to a garage all show up in testing. The new board gives each its own correctly rated protection, and we write up anything that needs more than a board change.

Tidying up a patchwork of switchgear

Extended homes often end up with more than one consumer unit: the original by the front door, a second fitted for the extension, perhaps a small garage unit and a separate switch for an electric shower. Each may have different protection, or none, and it is rarely obvious which switch turns off what. That is confusing in an emergency and harder to keep safe.

Where it makes sense, we combine them into a single board with enough ways for everything, sized from 10 ways at £495 for dual RCD or £695 for full RCBO. Where a second board genuinely needs to stay, such as in a detached garage, we make sure it is properly fed and protected from the main one.

Not usually. If the main board has room, or a slightly larger one is fitted, the extension circuits can often be brought back to it and the second unit removed. That gives you one place to isolate the house and one certificate covering everything. We will confirm from photos of both boards.

In most cases the shower circuit is moved onto a way in the new consumer unit with its own RCBO or RCD protection, and the old separate switch box is taken out. That leaves one tidy board and gives the shower the same protection as everything else in the house.

Every way on the new board is labelled in plain words, such as kitchen sockets or upstairs lights, and you receive a printed circuit chart fixed beside it. That schedule is repeated on your Electrical Installation Certificate, sent over by email inside 48 hours, so a copy survives if the printed chart goes missing.
