The house then relies on an earth rod sunk into the ground close by, which is known as a TT arrangement. RCD protection is essential on these supplies, because without it a fault may not draw enough current to operate a fuse or breaker.
Whenever we change a board on a TT supply, we measure how well the rod is performing, inspect it and its clamp, and lay out the new board to suit, usually with a time delayed main RCD or RCBOs on every circuit. If there is no rod, or the reading is poor, you hear about it before any work begins.
