Near the Racton Monument folly

Fuse Box Replacement in Racton

Racton is a very small hamlet in Stoughton parish, north west of Chichester and not far from the Racton Monument, the ruined folly on the hill. Because there are so few homes, no two supplies are quite alike; even so, every fuse box replacement here is priced at a fixed figure, and the journey is free.

Homes in Racton

Isolated homes, each with its own quirks

Racton is little more than a handful of properties among fields towards the western edge of the county. In places this small, homes tend to be farmhouses, cottages and converted farm buildings, each wired at different times by different people. There is no standard house type to fall back on, so we study each property's photos carefully before quoting.

At isolated rural homes we commonly expect an older board with only partial RCD protection, sometimes a tired main switch, and earthing that depends entirely on a rod in the ground. All of it is checked, and put right where needed, when we change the board.

  • Partial RCD cover fixed

When your earth comes from a rod in the ground

Homes on overhead rural supplies are often on a TT earthing system: the network does not provide an earth, so the house relies on its own electrode, usually a copper rod driven into the soil. On a TT supply RCD protection is essential, because the earth path alone is rarely good enough to make an ordinary breaker trip quickly when a fault occurs.

When we replace a board on a TT property, we measure the electrode's resistance, check the earthing conductor and its connections, and arrange the new board so every circuit is RCD protected. If the rod reading is poor, we recommend a new electrode rather than leaving it as it is.

  • Earth electrode resistance tested
  • Every circuit RCD protected
  • Earthing conductor checked
  • Poor rods flagged honestly

Look near the meter and board for a green and yellow earth cable running out through a wall or down into the ground, often to a rod under a small cover, with no earth clamp on the incoming supply cable. Still unsure? Photos of the meter area and the incoming cable will let us check for you.

Not when it is properly installed and protected. A TT system relies on RCDs to disconnect quickly in a fault, so the condition of the electrode and the RCDs is what counts. That is why we test both when fitting a new board, and why we never leave a TT property with circuits outside RCD protection.

Usually only the earth rod, if there is one, and any outbuilding fed from the house board. Please make sure gates are unlocked and the cover over the rod can be reached. Everything else, from isolating the supply to the final tests, happens at the meter and consumer unit inside.
