Later twentieth century boards

Split load units and their weak spot

Alongside older properties, villages like North Chailey include houses from the later twentieth century, and many homes built or rewired in that period were given a split load consumer unit. One RCD protects some circuits, usually the sockets, while others such as lighting have none. It was a real improvement on fuse wire, but by today's standards it leaves gaps.

The usual trouble is that one RCD carries the combined leakage of every circuit behind it, so a small fault anywhere can trip them all together. A new unit closes the gaps, giving lighting and every other circuit RCD protection, and spreads the circuits across separate devices.

Finding the reason a board keeps tripping

A board that trips at random is telling you something, though not always what you think. Common causes include moisture in an outdoor socket or light, a failing appliance, the built up leakage of many electronic devices on one RCD, or a damaged cable. Swapping the board without finding the cause just moves the problem somewhere else.

We test first, circuit by circuit, to locate the fault, then recommend the right board. A full RCBO unit from £625 for 8 ways gives each circuit its own protection, so if something does trip, only that circuit goes off and the culprit is easy to trace.

  • Faults located before replacing
  • Outdoor fittings checked for damp
  • Each circuit on its own RCBO
  • Essential circuits kept separate

Water getting into an outdoor socket, a garden light, an external cable joint or a garage supply is the usual reason. Moisture creates a small leakage path to earth, and the RCD does exactly what it should. We test the outdoor circuits, find the wet fitting and replace or reseal it, then put that circuit on its own protection.

It may be working, but a board like that was usually extended in stages, and the older half normally has no RCD protection at all. We would recommend a single new unit. Six ways on two RCDs start at £425, and from £625 every circuit can have separate protection on a full RCBO board.

Fitting usually takes between four and six hours, with the supply off for much of that while the circuits are disconnected and then reconnected. We confirm the start time when we book. Keep fridges and freezers closed and they will normally be fine, and we check they are running again before we leave.
