A hamlet in the Ouse valley

Fuse Box Replacement in Tarring Neville

Only a few homes make up Tarring Neville, a hamlet with its own parish on the east side of the Ouse valley just north of Newhaven. Rural properties can have supplies and earthing quite unlike a town house, so we check both before fitting your new consumer unit.

A few homes among farmland

Tarring Neville is a scattering of homes, farm buildings and a small church rather than a village with streets. Properties here are typically farmhouses and cottages set apart from one another with fields between, and their electrical installations reflect that: many have been altered over a long period, sometimes with supplies running out to barns and stores.

In a property like this, the fuse box might still be an old wired fuse board, or a newer unit fitted without anyone checking the earth rod outside. We look at the whole picture, from the board and meter tails to the main earth and the bonding to water and any oil or gas pipes, then fit a board suited to a rural supply.

Why TT earthing changes the job

Out in the valley, electricity often arrives by overhead line rather than underground cable, and many such homes are on a TT system, where the earth comes from a metal rod in the ground at the property instead of from UK Power Networks. That rod is the only safe path for fault current, so its condition really matters.

On a TT supply every circuit needs RCD protection to disconnect quickly, and the earth rod must test within safe limits. With each board change we measure the electrode resistance, check its connection and replace a corroded or loose clamp if needed. If the rod itself is inadequate, we explain the fix before anything is switched back on.

  • Earth electrode resistance measured
  • RCD protection on every circuit
  • Overhead supply noted
  • Corroded clamps replaced

Look for a cable running from a pole to a bracket on your wall or roof, or to a pole near the house where it drops underground. If you are unsure, photograph the outside of the house where the supply enters, plus the meter and board, and text the pictures to us. We will tell you what you have.

Yes, as long as the supply to the barn is safe. We test the cable and its protection, and on a TT system we check how the barn is earthed, because outbuildings with their own rod, or with no proper earth at all, are a common weak spot. Anything that needs changing is explained and priced before we carry on.

The Electrical Installation Certificate records the new board, the type of earthing, the earth electrode resistance where there is a rod, and the test results for every circuit. You will receive it by email no more than 48 hours later, and we notify Building Control of the work under Part P. Keep it safe, as insurers and buyers' surveyors may ask for it.
