Fuse Box Replacement in Battle

Battle is a small historic town set around its abbey and High Street, surrounded by farmland, woods and villages such as Netherfield, Catsfield and Sedlescombe. Many homes out here rely on overhead supplies and their own earth rod. We replace fuse boxes with consumer units suited to exactly that.

Historic High Street, newer roads, scattered farms

The High Street and the roads around the abbey contain many old and listed buildings, some with shops below and homes above. Beyond the centre, Battle has twentieth century roads and newer housing, and then the countryside begins quickly, with cottages, farmhouses, converted barns and bungalows spread across the parish and the surrounding villages. Around Battle, older buildings and newer ones often sit side by side on the same road.

That range means we see everything from original fuse boxes in old cottages to boards in barn conversions that were wired well but now need more circuits. Each is tested fully before and after the change. In old buildings, we keep cable runs discreet and fit the new board where the old one was whenever we can.

Letting around Battle

Cottages, annexes and visitor lets

Battle draws a steady flow of visitors to the abbey and battlefield, and some local owners let cottages, annexes or converted outbuildings as holiday accommodation. Others let to long term tenants, including people commuting to London on the Hastings line. Annexes and outbuildings are often supplied from the main house, which means the board in the house protects more than it first appears to.

Long term lets need an EICR at least every five years. Genuine holiday lets fall outside those rules, but many owners keep one for insurance. Either way, an EICR is £99 alongside a board change. If an annexe is supplied from the main house, we test that circuit too and tell you if the annexe would benefit from its own protected sub board.

  • Long term lets for commuters

  • EICR for £99 with any board
  • Standalone EICR from £175

TT earthing on Battle's rural edge

Once you leave the town, a lot of properties around Battle are supplied by overhead lines from UK Power Networks. Many of these homes are on a TT earthing system, where the earth comes from a rod in the ground rather than from the network. The rod's condition, and how the RCD protection is arranged, matter a great deal, because together they are what keeps the installation safe if a fault occurs.

When we fit a board in a TT earthed home, we measure the earth electrode resistance and choose protection that suits it. If the rod is missing or poor, we will explain the options before we start. We also check that main bonding to incoming water and oil pipes is in place, as it can be missing in older rural homes.

  • TT earth rods tested

Getting to you

Power problems in Battle

Rural homes can be harder to reach, but a board fault still needs prompt attention. Ring 0333 360 8691 from 8am to 8pm, any day of the week, and we will aim to reach Battle or your village the same day where we can. We make the installation safe first, then give you a fixed price for any board replacement.

If your whole road has lost power, it is likely to be a network fault. In that case, call UK Power Networks on 105 first. If it is only your property, or only part of it, call us and we will help you check the board safely over the phone first.

You need a board whose RCD protection suits a TT system, and we design for that as standard. On a TT system the RCDs do the main job of disconnecting the supply in a fault, so every circuit must be covered. We also test the rod itself. If its resistance is too high or it is in poor condition, we will tell you and price a replacement rod.

Yes. The flat's consumer unit can usually be replaced independently of the shop below. We confirm the two supplies are properly separated and that your flat's earthing and bonding are correct. If the building is listed, we keep the work to the existing board position where possible, so nothing visible changes.

It is common, and not a problem in itself, as long as the cable is correctly sized and protected and the barn has the right protection at its end. When we replace the farmhouse board, we test the circuit to the barn and check whether it needs its own sub board. We explain our findings before fitting anything extra.

The 2020 rented sector regulations apply to tenancies, not genuine short holiday stays, so an EICR is not a legal requirement for a holiday let in the same way. Many owners still have one done every few years because insurers and guests expect a safe property. We can carry it out for £99 alongside a board change, or from £175 on its own.

Battle is in Rother District. As a Part P registered business we notify every board change to Building Control on your behalf, and you receive a compliance certificate by post. Your Electrical Installation Certificate is emailed within 48 hours. Keep both documents together, as they are useful if you sell the property or claim on insurance.
