A village that grew estate by estate
A good deal of Crawley Down's housing is on estates built from the second half of the twentieth century onwards, around an older core. Boards in these homes tend to be early consumer units with a single RCD or none at all, or plastic split load units fitted during kitchen and rewiring work in the 1990s and 2000s.
Since 2016, new consumer units in homes have had to be housed in a non-combustible enclosure, which in practice means metal. That does not make a plastic board unsafe by default, yet whatever replaces yours will be metal clad and include Type 2 surge protection, with the cheapest option, 6 ways of dual RCD protection, at £425.
- Early consumer units replaced
- Plastic boards to metal clad
- Single RCD boards upgraded
- Dual RCD boards from £425

When the board has run out of space
Estate houses are often extended over the years: a loft conversion, a kitchen knocked through, a garage turned into a room. Each project adds circuits, and when the original board has no spare ways the new cables end up doubled into existing breakers or fed from a second small unit fixed beside the first.
We bring everything back into one properly labelled board with a way for every circuit. Larger extended homes are usually best with an RCBO board of 14 to 16 ways, from £795, where every circuit is protected separately, so a fault in the new loft room cannot plunge the kitchen into darkness.
- Doubled up circuits separated
- Extra units consolidated
- Every circuit labelled
- 14 to 16 way RCBO from £795
Up the M23 to Crawley Down
Getting to Crawley Down from Brighton & Hove is an easy run: up the A23 and M23, then east on the A264 in the direction of East Grinstead. Pictures of the consumer unit and meter, sent by text, let us fix the quote, and the journey adds nothing to it. When a board has failed altogether, phone us; getting someone out that day is our aim.

Asked in Crawley Down
Call for a straight answer from an installer, not a call centre.
Call 0333 360 8691Crawley Down shares the RH10 postcode district with eastern Crawley, but it is a separate village in Worth parish, under Mid Sussex District Council rather than Crawley Borough Council. None of that changes the job for you, since our fixed prices stay the same and we charge nothing for travel anywhere in Sussex.
Not automatically. Plastic units fitted before 2016 met the rules of their day, and many still work well. We recommend replacing one when it lacks RCD protection, shows signs of heat damage, has no room for new circuits or trips repeatedly. An EICR, £99 alongside a board change or £175 to £350 on its own, gives you a clear picture of the whole installation.
Usually, yes. If the new board has enough ways, we can bring the loft or extension circuits back into it, remove the extra unit and test everything together. Whether that is practical depends on where the cables run, so send photos of both units and their positions when you ask for a price.
