A country village, wired over many decades

Pett is a rural village with houses strung along its main road and lanes, older cottages among later homes, and farm buildings around the edges. Country properties like these have often been extended and modernised a piece at a time, so it is common to find a main board, an older fused switch for the garage and a separate feed to a workshop or annexe.

We trace each of these before we start, so the quote covers everything that needs protection. Where an outbuilding has its own small board, we price that separately and can replace both in a single visit, with one certificate covering the lot.

  • Garage and workshop feeds traced
  • Outbuilding boards priced separately
  • One visit, one certificate
  • Every circuit labelled

Testing the earth on a TT supply

Away from towns, electricity often arrives on overhead lines, and many homes are not given an earth by the network. Their earth comes from a rod sunk into the soil instead, an arrangement called TT. Safety on a TT supply depends on that rod working together with RCD protection, so a fuse box with no RCDs at all is a particular worry.

On every TT job the resistance of the earth electrode is measured, and the rod and its clamp are checked for soundness. If the reading is too high, we tell you and recommend a remedy. The new board gives every circuit RCD protection, and the Type 2 surge protection we include guards against spikes carried along overhead lines.

  • Earth rod resistance measured
  • RCD protection on every circuit
  • Surge protection for overhead supplies
  • Building Control notified under Part P

Pett questions

Asked in Pett

Still not sure?

Call for a straight answer from an installer, not a call centre.

Quite possibly. Look near your meter. If the main green and yellow earth cable runs out through the wall to a rod in the ground, often under a small inspection cover outside, rather than connecting to a terminal on the incoming supply, you are probably on TT. Send a photo with your quote request and we will confirm it.

Modern homes are full of electronics that a voltage spike can damage, and supplies on overhead lines are more exposed to spikes from lightning and switching on the network. Fitted at the board, Type 2 surge protection sends that energy safely away to earth. It is built into our prices rather than added as an extra.

Every board change already includes testing and inspection of the whole property, because a new board is only as safe as the circuits it feeds. If you also want a full Electrical Installation Condition Report, a written record for insurers or a future sale, it costs £99 alongside a board.
