Roadside houses and later village homes
Much of Hurst Green lines the main road, with later homes on the roads leading off it, so the village has boards of every age. Older properties may still have a fuse box with rewireable fuses, while houses built or rewired later in the twentieth century often have a first generation consumer unit that is now well past its best.
Homes in the village itself are more likely to have an earth provided by the network than the scattered properties outside it, though we never assume. We confirm the earthing type, test the main bonding to gas and water pipes, and tell you if any bonding is missing.
- Rewireable fuse boxes replaced
- Early consumer units upgraded
- Main bonding tested
- Earthing type confirmed on the day

Older RCD boards that trip too much
Plenty of houses had a consumer unit fitted in the 1990s or 2000s with one or two RCDs covering several circuits each. It was a step forward at the time, but a single fault can switch off everything sharing that RCD, often the lights along with the fridge. Many of those boards are also plastic, while new boards in homes must now have non combustible enclosures.
Swapping to a full RCBO board gives every circuit its own protection, so a faulty appliance only takes out the circuit it is on. An 8 way RCBO board is £625, 10 to 12 ways £695, and 14 to 16 ways £795. Adding arc fault detection starts at £1,095 on a 10 way board.
- One fault, one circuit off
- Non combustible enclosure
- RCBO boards from £625
- AFDD option from £1,095

Asked in Hurst Green
Call for a straight answer from an installer, not a call centre.
Call 0333 360 8691Not always. Age alone is not the test. If it has RCD protection on every circuit that needs it, works reliably and is in good condition, it may be fine, and an EICR will tell you. Common reasons to replace a board of that age are nuisance tripping, no spare ways, scorching, or a plastic enclosure in a vulnerable spot.
Not automatically, but a board like that is likely to be well over forty years old, with no RCD protection against electric shock and fuses that are slower and less precise than modern breakers. The wooden backing and any scorching are worth a closer look. An EICR will tell you exactly where you stand, or we can price a replacement from photos.
Please make sure we can get to the meter, the board and the main earth connection, and let us know about anything that must not lose power without warning, such as medical equipment or a well stocked freezer. If you work from home, plan for the supply to be off for much of the day while the board is changed and tested.
