Tilgate's housing went up during Crawley's first new town decades, largely terraces and semi detached family houses, often extended since with porches, conservatories or bigger kitchens. Boards range from old fuse boxes with rewireable fuses to plastic units fitted at some later point, and sometimes there is a second small board feeding the added rooms.

A new board needs sound cables behind it
A newer consumer unit does not mean newer cables. In houses built in the early years of the new town, some circuits may still run on wiring from the original build, joined over time by additions of every age. Old insulation can deteriorate without any visible sign, and an RCD will often trip as soon as it is asked to protect it.
That is why every board change includes testing the whole property, not just connecting the new unit. Insulation resistance tests show whether each circuit is sound. If one is not, we tell you before going further and explain the choices, rather than hiding a problem behind a smart new cover.

Cables that are tired but serviceable are recorded, and any circuit that is unsafe or likely to trip the new protection is explained to you before we decide together what to do.
We will not leave a dangerous circuit connected. Depending on the fault, it may be a simple repair at a socket or light fitting, or a sign that part of the house needs rewiring. We explain what we found, leave everything else working and safe, and give you clear options before any extra work is agreed.
The budget option, at £425 upwards, is a dual RCD board that shares the circuits between two RCDs. Full RCBO, starting at £625, protects every circuit individually, meaning a fault trips only the one affected. An RCBO board with arc fault detection, from £1,095, also watches for the sparking that can start fires in damaged cables.
