Fuse Box Relocation in Sussex
Flat conversions across Sussex have hidden fuse boxes in some genuinely bad places: damp cellars under Victorian terraces in the coastal towns, coat cupboards you could never reach in a fire, even above the bed in studios carved out of Regency and Victorian houses. We move consumer units to somewhere safe, dry and reachable, with tidy cable extensions or full rerouting, every circuit tested and the work certified under Part P.
Every move ends like this: tidy, labelled and tested
Out of the cellar, onto the wall you can reach
A century of conversions has left switchgear across Sussex in strange corners. We find a fuse box in the cellar below a Victorian terrace, streaming with condensation. A fuse box in the bedroom of a converted studio flat, mounted over the pillow. Boards behind bath panels, at ankle height in old coal holes, and buried behind the coats in hall cupboards where nobody could find the main switch in a hurry.
BS 7671 is clear that switchgear must stay accessible for inspection, testing and emergency switching, and every one of those positions fails that test. When we move a fuse box or relocate a consumer unit, it goes to a hallway, garage or utility space at safe working height, with the circuits extended through maintenance-free enclosures or fully rerouted where the runs make more sense that way.
One more thing worth knowing before you plan a meter cupboard move: the meter and main cutout belong to your electricity supplier and the network operator, not to us or you. We relocate the consumer unit and coordinate their side of the job so the two happen together, not months apart.

A fuse box relocation in Sussex
One photo from this kind of job in Sussex, showing a board moved to a safe, dry and reachable spot and fully labelled.
Why where your fuse box lives matters
A consumer unit in the wrong place is a safety problem even when the board itself is modern. Here is what a proper relocation puts right, and why we take each point seriously in the converted and older housing stock across Sussex.
- Reachable in an emergency When a cable is burning or someone is being shocked, the main switch has to be seconds away, not behind a locked cellar door or under a pile of coats. BS 7671 requires switchgear to be accessible for emergency switching, and restoring that is the first job of any move.
- Out of the damp Condensation in basement cellars corrodes terminals and steel enclosures, and the salt in seafront air accelerates it badly in homes along the Sussex coast. Corroded connections run hot and seized devices fail to trip. A dry position is a safety measure, not a cosmetic one.
- Away from sleeping areas A board above the bed in a studio flat puts the one place a fault could arc, spark or smoke directly over the one place you are unconscious. We move boards out of bedrooms so a failing device never shares a room with someone asleep.
- Safe working height and clear access A board at chest height with clear space in front can be inspected, tested and isolated safely for decades. One on a cellar floor, above a door or boxed in behind shelving means every future electrician works badly, or does not work on it at all.
- Escape route thinking The cupboard under a timber staircase is often the worst place of all, because a board fault there attacks the staircase, which is the escape route itself. We site boards so an electrical fire cannot stand between you and your front door.
- Joints done properly Extending circuits means joints, and joints are where bad relocations fail years later. Ours go in accessible or maintenance-free enclosures, crimped or screwless connectors to the standard, never chocolate block strips taped up and buried in a wall where no one can ever check them.
Where a fuse box should live
- A hallway at safe working height, the position we choose most often across Sussex
- A utility room or rear lobby, dry, ventilated and out of the way
- An integral or attached garage, a natural fit in interwar semis and new build estate homes
- A dedicated switchgear cupboard with clear access, not a coat store
- Somewhere you can reach standing on the floor, no ladder, no crawling
- With clear space in front to open the lid, test and isolate for years to come
Every move starts with a free survey anywhere in East and West Sussex, from Chichester to Rye and every town on our coverage list. We walk the cable routes, agree the new position with you and put the whole job in writing as a fixed price.
Straightforward relocation pricing
Added to any new board
from £250The best value move. Every circuit is already disconnected for the fuse board replacement, so relocating at the same time costs least. Board replacement explained.
Standalone relocation
from £395An existing modern board moved without replacing it, most often a recent RCBO board that a flat conversion left in the wrong place.
Complex reroutes
fixed after surveyLong runs and full rerouting of every circuit, priced as one fixed figure after the survey, never by the hour and never revised on the day.
The meter and main cutout belong to your electricity supplier and the district network operator. If the whole electric meter cupboard is moving, they relocate their equipment and we coordinate the applications and dates for you.
From bad position to certificate
Photo, then a free survey
Text a photo of your board and the spot you have in mind for a same day steer, then we survey anywhere in Sussex, evenings included, and walk the cable routes with you.
Fixed price and a plan
You get one written fixed price covering the move, the joints and the making good. If the meter or cutout is moving too, we submit the network operator application and line the dates up.
Move day
Most slots run 3 to 5 working days out. We isolate, extend or reroute each circuit through maintenance-free enclosures, mount the board in its new home and have the power back on the same day.
Tested, certified, notified
Every circuit is dead tested and live tested by our Level 3 qualified testing engineers, your certificate is emailed within 48 hours and your local council's Building Control is notified under Part P.
Garage consumer units and outbuilding supplies
Garages, sheds and garden rooms across Sussex are working harder than they used to. EV chargers on new build driveways around Burgess Hill and Horsham, workshop machinery in barns in the Weald, home offices at the bottom of gardens along the coast. Plenty are still fed from a single fused spur, with an ageing box inside that has not been looked at in decades, and that is where a garage consumer unit replacement earns its keep.
A proper garage fusebox upgrade gives the outbuilding its own compact board with RCD or RCBO protection, fed from a dedicated way on the main house board through correctly sized armoured cable, not a length of twin and earth stapled along the fence. A fault in the workshop then trips the garage board rather than plunging the whole house into darkness, and an EV charger gets the dedicated, protected circuit it needs.
Sometimes the honest answer starts at the house end. If the main board is full or has no RCD protection, a fuse box change there comes first, because a new garage supply is only as good as the board that feeds it. We price both together so you can see exactly what each part costs. And if you want the main house board moved into the garage itself, that is exactly the relocation this page covers, from £250 alongside a new board.
- Typical garage boardDual RCD 6 ways from £425, full RCBO 8 ways from £625
- Feed from the houseA dedicated way on the main board and correctly sized armoured cable
- Included as standardType 2 SPD, full testing, an Electrical Installation Certificate and Part P notification
- Main board into the garageFrom £250 with a new board, from £395 standalone

Almost, within the rules. The board has to end up somewhere accessible for emergency switching, inspection and testing, at a sensible working height, out of the damp and clear of your escape route. In practice that means hallways, utility rooms, garages and dedicated switchgear cupboards work well, while a wet cellar under a Victorian terrace or a shelf above your bed does not. The survey is where we agree the exact spot. We walk the cable routes with you and always explain why a position is or is not suitable rather than just saying no.
Only if the meter or the main cutout has to move as well. The consumer unit is yours, so we can relocate it without anyone else's permission. The meter belongs to your electricity supplier and the cutout and service cable belong to the district network operator, so if you want the whole electric meter cupboard moved, they carry out that part of the work. We handle the applications and line up the dates for you so their visit and ours dovetail, which matters in the older terraces and cottages across Sussex where the supply position was fixed generations ago.
When the move happens alongside a board replacement, most jobs across Sussex still finish in a single visit, typically 4 to 6 hours on site with the power off for around 4 to 5 hours of that. A standalone relocation of an existing modern board is usually a day as well. Long reroutes, for example moving a board from the cellar of a Victorian terrace up to a ground floor hallway with every circuit extended, can run to a second day, and we tell you that at the fixed quote stage, never on the morning.
Yes, and it is the best value way to do it. Every circuit is already disconnected for the replacement, so moving the board at the same time adds from £250 rather than the from £395 a standalone move costs. You get a new 18th Edition board with dual RCD or RCBO protection and a Type 2 surge protection device, sited somewhere safe and sensible, with one set of testing, one Electrical Installation Certificate and one Part P notification covering the lot. Most of the relocations we do across Sussex happen exactly this way.
Yes. We fit compact garage boards with dual RCD or RCBO protection, most often for EV chargers, workshop machinery and garden offices across Sussex. A 6 way dual RCD board starts from £425 and a full RCBO board with 8 ways from £625, and every new board includes a Type 2 surge protection device, full testing, an Electrical Installation Certificate and Part P notification. We also check the feed from the house and replace it with correctly sized armoured cable where it falls short.
Often, yes, and an integral or attached garage is one of the positions we recommend most in interwar semis along the coast and on the 1950s to 1970s estates across the county. The garage needs to be dry, connected to the house or reachable without going outside in an emergency, and the board goes at safe working height with clear access. Moved alongside a new board it adds from £250, while a standalone move costs from £395, both tested, certified and notified under Part P.
