Fuse boxes tucked into historic homes
Frant's character comes from the period houses and cottages around the green and near St Alban's church, many of them built long before mains electricity. Wiring in homes like these has usually been replaced at least once, and fuse boxes were tucked wherever space allowed: under stairs, in cellars or in a kitchen corner. Older work often sits alongside circuits added by different electricians over many years.
We aim to fit the new consumer unit in the existing position where it is safe and accessible, which avoids disturbing old plaster and joinery. Where a move is needed, we plan the cable route with you first. Relocation alongside a new board adds £250.
- Existing position used where safe
- Cable routes agreed first
- Old and new circuits reconciled

Working carefully in Frant's older houses
Frant has a number of listed buildings, and its historic centre around the green is a conservation area. A consumer unit change is largely a like for like swap, but the work around it still matters: surface cable runs, fixings into old timber and holes through walls all need thought in a building whose character you want to keep.
We use the shortest practical cable routes, protect floors and finishes while we work, and talk through anything that might affect the building before we start. If you are unsure whether a change needs listed building consent, check with Wealden District Council before the work goes ahead.

Asked in Frant
Call for a straight answer from an installer, not a call centre.
Call 0333 360 8691Usually not. Replacing a consumer unit in the same position reuses the existing circuits, so there is rarely any need to cut into plaster. If a circuit has to be extended or the board moved, we discuss the options with you first, including neat surface trunking where that is kinder to the building.
If the cellar is dry and the board can be reached easily and safely, it can stay. If there is damp, poor access or a low ceiling over the unit, we may suggest moving it, which adds £250 when done with a new board. Photos of the cellar and the route down to it help us advise.
On its own, an Electrical Installation Condition Report is priced between £175 and £350 according to how big the property is, and it gives you a written assessment of the whole installation. If the board needs replacing anyway, an EICR carried out alongside the new board costs just £99.
