Solid walls and older wiring

Along Jevington's valley road sits a small run of cottages and individual houses, many of them built with solid walls. In homes like these, cables were often buried in the plaster or run in old conduit, and the fuse box may have been changed once while the wiring behind it was not. That is why we test before anything is swapped.

Insulation resistance tests show whether old cables will sit happily behind modern RCD protection. If a circuit fails, we tell you which one and why, rather than leaving you with a board that keeps tripping. If a circuit needs attention beyond the board change, you will hear it from us first, along with what it would involve.

When your earth comes from a rod

Not every home in a downland village takes its earth from the network cable. Homes fed by overhead lines are often TT earthed, which means the earth comes from a metal rod sunk into the soil close to the house. On chalk, a good reading from that rod is not guaranteed, and it can change with the seasons. We measure it as part of every Jevington board change.

On a TT supply the RCDs in your consumer unit are what clear an earth fault, so they matter even more than usual. If the rod reading is too high, or the rod cannot be found, we can fit a new one. Your certificate records the measured value, so the next electrician has a baseline to compare against.

  • New rod fitted where needed

Look near your electricity meter for a green and yellow cable. If it runs to a clamp on a rod in the ground outside, or disappears through the wall towards the garden, you are probably TT earthed. Usually a photo of the meter and board is enough for us to tell you.

Not automatically. Plenty of older homes have been rewired at some point and the cables test perfectly well. We carry out the tests first and only recommend further work when a circuit actually fails. If the house still has rubber insulated or lead sheathed cable, we will show you where and explain the next step.

Jevington lies within the National Park, but replacing a consumer unit inside your home does not normally need planning permission. The work is covered by Building Regulations instead, which we handle through Part P notification. If your house is listed, tell us when you book so we can keep any new fixings and cable runs discreet.
