Houses at The Bar and their wiring
Small rural settlements around Shipley tend to have a mix of older cottages, farm related houses and individually built homes, often with the electrics altered piece by piece over many years.
That patchwork often shows at the meter position: two or three separate units, a switch fuse for the cooker, another for the heaters. A new board can bring these together neatly, with dual RCD protection from £425 and surge protection fitted as standard.
- Several old units combined
- Separate switch fuses tidied
- Dual RCD from £425
- Type 2 surge protection fitted

Night storage heaters, Economy 7 and your board
Plenty of rural homes away from the gas network rely on storage heaters charged overnight on a cheaper rate. These are often wired through a second, off peak board or a group of switch fuses beside the meter, switched by the meter or a time clock. When the main fuse box is replaced, those circuits deserve the same attention.
We check how your off peak supply is arranged before quoting. Sometimes the heater circuits move onto the new board, sometimes they stay on a separate unit that we test and report on. Either way, the heaters, immersion and timers are tested after the change.
- Off peak circuits identified
- Heaters tested after the change
- Immersion and timers checked
- Second board inspected too

Asked in The Bar
Call for a straight answer from an installer, not a call centre.
Call 0333 360 8691Not always. The off peak unit feeds the storage heaters and sometimes the immersion, and is switched by the meter or a timer. If it is old or has no RCD protection, it makes sense to bring those circuits onto the new main board or replace that unit as well. Your photos usually show us which.
No. The meter belongs to your energy supplier and we do not alter it. We isolate the supply, fit the new board and connect it back to the existing meter arrangement. Your day and night rates carry on as before, and the heaters charge overnight as usual.
They can be. Heaters sharing an RCD with other circuits can all go off together if one develops a fault, leaving rooms cold by morning. A full RCBO board, which starts at £625, gives every heater circuit its own protection, so a fault on one leaves the rest still charging.
