Homes on the town's edge

Where town meets country, boards from every era

Because it sits right on the edge of Battle, Starr's Green has homes that feel part of the town as well as others with a more rural outlook. In houses built or rewired in the later twentieth century, a board we often meet is the split load unit, where one or two RCDs each guard a whole group of circuits.

Those boards were a big step forward when they were fitted, but they share protection between many circuits. A fault on one can cut power to half the house, often taking the fridge freezer and the lights with it at the same moment.

  • Split load boards upgraded
  • Rewireable fuse boxes replaced
  • Circuits separated and labelled
  • Whole house tested

When one fault switches off half the house

If your RCD trips and takes several rooms with it, the cause is often a single appliance or a small leak to earth somewhere in a shared group of circuits. Hunting it down by switching things off one at a time is frustrating, and a fault at night can leave you without lights. A full RCBO board solves this by giving each circuit its own protection.

With RCBOs, a faulty kettle knocks out only the kitchen sockets, and everything else stays on. An 8 way RCBO board is £625 and 10 to 12 ways is £695. On a tighter budget, a modern dual RCD board, starting at £425, is still a big step up from an old fuse box.

  • Each circuit protected on its own
  • Faults easier to find
  • Lights stay on when sockets trip
  • Clear labelling at the board

An RCD that trips now and then is doing its job, but repeated trips usually point to a fault worth finding, such as moisture in an outdoor socket or a failing appliance. An EICR tests every circuit and often reveals the cause. It costs £175 to £350 on its own, or £99 when booked with a board change.

Since 2016 the wiring regulations have required consumer units in homes to be housed in non-combustible material, which in practice means a metal enclosure. An existing plastic unit is not automatically unsafe, but it is something an inspector will note. Every board we fit is metal, with surge protection included.

Our workmanship carries a 6 year guarantee, and the board itself comes with its manufacturer's warranty. You also receive the Electrical Installation Certificate within 48 hours, which records the test results for every circuit. Keep both documents together, as they are useful when you sell or remortgage.
