Homes on the edge of a common

Few houses, each wired its own way

A hamlet named after a common is usually a loose collection of cottages and houses rather than a planned street. Each property has its own supply, its own history of alterations and, often, its own outbuildings. The fuse box might be decades old or recently changed, and the only reliable way to know what you have is to look at it.

A photo is enough to start. One picture of the board and one of the meter let us say whether you have a rewirable fuse box, an MCB board with no RCDs or something more recent, and what replacing it would cost. Dual RCD boards start at £425 and full RCBO boards at £625.

Why the RCD matters more on a rod earthed home

Homes fed by overhead lines often get no earth from the network at all, and instead depend on an earth rod sunk into the ground. That arrangement is known as a TT system. On TT, the RCD is the device that actually clears an earth fault, because a rod cannot pass enough fault current to operate a fuse quickly. An old board without RCD protection leaves a real gap.

On a rod earthed home we often recommend a time delayed RCD protecting the cables from the meter, with RCBOs or a dual RCD board beneath it. We measure the rod's resistance on every visit and check the clamp and conductor. If the rod is missing, damaged or reads too high, we explain the remedy before work starts.

On a rod earthed property that is often a time delayed RCD, fitted to protect the cables between the meter and the board. It should not be removed without thought. When we replace the board we check whether it is still needed and working properly, and then keep it, replace it or bring its job into the new arrangement.

No. A rod is driven well into the ground, with only the top and its clamp visible, sometimes under a small cover. We test it from the surface with an earth electrode tester. If a rod fails and needs replacing, the work is small and confined to the spot where the new rod goes in.

Yes. RCBOs suit TT systems well because each circuit gets its own residual current protection, so one fault does not disconnect the whole home. On TT we usually pair them with a time delayed RCD upstream. A full RCBO board starts at £625 for 8 ways, and the earthing checks are part of the price.
