Fuse Box Replacement in Sidlesham Quay

Pagham Harbour's western edge is home to the small hamlet of Sidlesham Quay, a little way north of Selsey. Homes here live with tidal water and salt air close by, so we pay attention to where your new consumer unit sits and how its connections are protected.

Older cottages and houses by the water

As a hamlet, Sidlesham Quay is small: a cluster of houses and cottages near the water, several of them clearly old, set within the wider parish of Sidlesham. Older buildings tend to carry a history of electrical changes made in different decades, with a board that may be newer than some of the cabling it feeds, or the other way round.

Our quote is built from the pictures you send: the fuse board, where the meter sits, and any wiring you can see. On the day we test each circuit with the new unit in place. If an older cable fails insulation testing, we stop and talk it through with you rather than energising something we are not happy with.

  • Mixed era wiring tested
  • Insulation resistance checked
  • Findings explained on site

Electrics close to a tidal harbour

The Quay sits on low ground right at the harbour edge, and the harbour itself is a nature reserve. Moist, salty air is hard on metalwork: earth clamps, meter tail terminations and the screws on older boards can corrode over time, and a loose or corroded connection can run hot. We check and remake these connections whenever we change a board.

Where a board is in a garage, porch or outbuilding close to floor level, it can make sense to mount the new unit higher, out of reach of any water that gets in. We will suggest a position that suits the property, and moving it adds £250 to a new board if that is worthwhile.

  • Corroded earth clamps renewed
  • Meter tail connections remade
  • Higher mounting where sensible
  • Metal enclosure as standard
Getting to you

Booking a visit to the Quay

We come over from Brighton & Hove, along the A27 to Chichester and down through Sidlesham parish. Lanes near the harbour can be narrow, so tell us if parking a van is tricky. Board changes are usually booked ahead once we have seen your photos, while a dead board or a burning smell gets a same day response wherever we can manage it.

Usually, yes. Replacing a consumer unit in the same position is normally a like for like swap that leaves the historic fabric alone. If you want the board moved, or new cable runs chased into old walls, listed building consent may be needed. Check with Chichester District Council's conservation team first, and we will work to whatever they agree.

A modern metal consumer unit fitted indoors, with properly tightened connections, copes well with coastal conditions. Trouble usually comes from boards in unheated outbuildings or porches where condensation forms. If yours is in a spot like that, we will discuss a better position or a suitably rated enclosure before we start.

No. Getting to the harbour adds nothing, because we do not charge for travel anywhere in Sussex. Prices match Brighton exactly: £425 is where dual RCD boards start, and £625 is the starting figure fand a board with an RCBO on every circuit. The only things that change the price are the board you choose and any extra work we agree with you in advance.
