A small settlement on the way to Burpham

Wepham is smaller than Burpham itself, a loose group of homes on the approach to the village with fields and downland all around. The houses are a rural mix, older cottages alongside later properties, and like most homes in the parish they were built one at a time rather than to a pattern. That means the board, the supply and the earthing can differ from one house to the next.

So we price each home on its own merits. Most of what we need to know comes from photos of the consumer unit and meter, and on the day everything is tested, from the incoming supply to the last socket, before the certificate is handed over.

  • Supply and earthing checked

Surge protection for exposed supplies

Overhead lines crossing open farmland and downland are more exposed to lightning and storm damage than cables buried under a town. A strike near the line, or switching on the network after a fault, can send a brief voltage spike into homes, enough to damage boiler controls, broadband routers, televisions and other electronics.

Where a home is fed overhead, surge protection is well worth having, and a Type 2 device comes as standard on every new board we fit. If you already have a fairly modern consumer unit without one, we can retrofit surge protection on its own for £165, provided the board has room and is in good order.

  • Type 2 surge device as standard
  • Retrofit for £165
  • Protects boiler controls and routers
  • Board checked for space first

No device can promise that. A Type 2 surge protective device limits the spikes that arrive along the supply cable, which is the most common cause of damage to household electronics. A direct strike on the house is a different matter. Surge protection on the board, plus surge rated adaptors for sensitive equipment, gives good overall cover.

Not necessarily. If it is a metal unit with RCD protection on every circuit and it tests well, a surge protection retrofit for £165 may be all you need. If it is plastic, has circuits without RCD protection, or trips for no clear reason, a new board is better value. A photo is enough for us to give you an honest view on which applies.

If your neighbours are off too, or the fault is before the meter, call UK Power Networks on 105. The number is free and covers power cuts across Sussex. If only your home is affected and the main switch or RCDs will not reset, the fault is probably inside the property, and that is the time to ring us.
