Fuse Box Replacement in Millbrook

Millbrook is tucked away in Danehill parish, a hamlet west of Crowborough with a TN22 postcode. Rural properties like these often have their own earth rod rather than an earth from the network, and we test it properly whenever we replace a fuse box.

Rural homes with boards of every vintage

As a hamlet, Millbrook is a handful of houses rather than a street of matching homes, so there is no typical fuse box here. In rural properties like these it is common to see anything from wooden backed boards with rewirable fuses to 1990s plastic units with a single RCD, each with its own history of alterations. That is why we ask for photos and price for your house.

Whatever you have at the moment, it gets replaced by a metal consumer unit that meets the current wiring regulations and has a Type 2 surge protector built in. Dual RCD units begin at £425, and £625 buys an 8 way RCBO board that gives every circuit protection of its own.

  • Rewirable fuses replaced
  • Single RCD units upgraded
  • Metal enclosure as standard
  • Priced for your house, not a template

TT earthing: the rod that keeps you safe

On many rural supplies, the network does not provide an earth connection. Instead, earthing comes from a rod belonging to the property, sunk into the soil, in what is called a TT system. That rod is the only return path for fault current, so if it corrodes, gets damaged by digging or sits in very dry ground, the protection relying on it weakens without anyone noticing.

During a board change we measure the rod's resistance and check the earthing conductor and its clamp. RCDs are essential on TT supplies, and every board we fit has them. If the rod reading is poor, we tell you and quote to improve it, often with a new rod driven in a suitable spot nearby.

  • Earth rod resistance measured
  • Clamp and earthing cable checked
  • RCD protection on every circuit
  • New rod quoted if needed
Getting to you

Coming out to Millbrook

Some days we arrive by way of Lewes and Uckfield, other days across from Haywards Heath, and the journey is free either way, as it is everywhere in Sussex. When you message us, include pictures of the fuse box and, if they are visible, the earth rod and the cable running to it. Any day of the week, we try to fit fault visits in on the day you ring.

Normally outside, close to where the supply enters, sometimes under a small inspection cover. Over the years many get buried under paths or flower beds. The clamp on the rod should carry a label reading Safety Electrical Connection, Do Not Remove. If you cannot find it, a photo of the green and yellow cable leaving the meter area helps us trace it.

Sometimes. UK Power Networks can provide an earth terminal on some supplies, known as PME, but whether it is suitable depends on the supply and on things like outbuildings, car chargers or pools. We can advise on the pros and cons, but the decision and any work at the cut out rests with the network operator.

An earth rod has a much higher resistance than a network earth, so a fault to earth may not draw enough current to blow a fuse or trip a standard breaker. An RCD detects the small imbalance and disconnects quickly regardless. That is why older TT homes with no RCD at all are a priority for replacement.
