Heating changes in rural Rusper

Fuse Box Replacement in The Mount

Rusper parish takes in The Mount, a hamlet north west of Crawley. Away from the towns, some homes are heated by oil, LPG or electricity rather than mains gas. If yours is moving towards a heat pump or more electric heating, the fuse board is a sensible place to start.

Homes at The Mount and how they are wired

As a small rural settlement, The Mount has individual houses and cottages rather than an estate. Properties like these have usually been extended or modernised piecemeal, and the electrics follow the same pattern: an older fuse box serving a mix of original and newer circuits, sometimes with a separate unit added for a garage or outbuilding.

We test every circuit in the house with each board change, not just the new connections, so you learn which parts of the wiring are sound. If something fails, we explain it before going further. Prices begin at £425 for a steel dual RCD board, and your certificate follows by email inside 48 hours.

Heat pumps, storage heaters and the board behind them

Homes without mains gas often have higher electrical loads than town houses: storage heaters, an immersion heater, electric showers, and increasingly an air source heat pump. A heat pump needs its own dedicated circuit, and the installer will want a board with a spare way and suitable protection. An old fuse box can hold up a heat pump installation until it is replaced.

When we replace your board at The Mount, we can leave ways for a heat pump and its controls, check the main fuse rating with you, and keep off peak circuits for storage heaters correctly separated. Full RCBO protection, from £625, handles heavier, mixed loads like these well.

Not always, but often. The heat pump installer needs a spare way with the right type of protection, and many older boards have neither the space nor RCD protection. If your board is a fuse box or a crowded plastic unit, replacing it first usually makes the heat pump connection straightforward and avoids a separate add on box.

It adds planning rather than difficulty. Storage heaters and an off peak immersion are usually fed through a separate meter register or switched supply, so we trace which circuits belong where before anything is disconnected. Afterwards they are reconnected and tested so they still charge overnight on the cheaper rate.

Yes. Oil boilers need mains power for the burner, pump and controls, usually through a fused spur or their own circuit. We reconnect it to the new board, test it, and check the heating fires up before we leave. LPG systems with electric controls are handled the same way.
