Homes on their own plots

Cottages and farmhouses on a country supply

Merston is small, and its homes are largely individual properties rather than estates: older cottages, farmhouses and houses standing on their own plots. Boards in homes like these have often been patched over the years, with circuits added for outbuildings, water pumps or extra heating, and sometimes a second old unit doing a job the first one could not manage.

We replace the lot with a single consumer unit sized for what the house really needs. With dual RCDs, a 10 way board costs £495. For individual protection on every circuit, RCBO boards cost £625 with 8 ways and £695 with 10 to 12.

Overhead lines and TT earthing

Why your earthing matters more out here

Many rural properties take their supply from an overhead line on poles, and where the network does not provide an earth, the house relies on its own earth electrode in the ground. This is called a TT system. It is common in the countryside and perfectly safe when done properly, but it depends entirely on working RCD protection and a good electrode reading.

Every board change we carry out on a TT supply includes measuring the electrode resistance, checking the earthing conductor and confirming the RCDs disconnect quickly enough. If the electrode is poor or missing, we explain the fix and price it before going any further.

On a TT supply the house is earthed through its own rod in the ground rather than through the network's cable. A green and yellow cable running from near the meter down to the floor or out through a wall, sometimes to a small cover in the ground outside, is a common sign. A photo is enough for us to confirm it either way.

Not a different kind, but the protection matters more. On a TT supply every circuit must have RCD protection, which any board we fit provides. RCBO boards suit rural homes particularly well, because a fault on a pump or outbuilding circuit trips only that circuit instead of the whole house. Full RCBO boards start at £625.

The incoming cable, main fuse and service head belong to UK Power Networks, and the meter to your energy supplier, so we cannot alter them. If we find that equipment damaged or unsafe, we will tell you and explain how to report it. Your new board can then be fitted once the supply side has been made safe.
