Country homes, mixed ages

Rural houses where the wiring has been added to

As a small rural settlement, Crosspost is a few homes of different ages rather than a single estate, so no two boards are likely to look the same. In older country houses the meter and board were often put wherever was handy when power first arrived, which is why they turn up in porches, pantries and under the stairs.

Each quote starts from photos. From those we can see the board type, the earthing and the space around it, and tell you whether a straight swap will work or whether the position itself is part of the problem. Dual RCD boards start at £425 and full RCBO boards at £625.

Moving a consumer unit somewhere you can reach it

A board high above a door, behind a cupboard full of shoes or out in a damp outhouse is more than a nuisance. When something trips in the dark, you need to reach the switches quickly and safely. A board change is the ideal moment to move it, because the circuits are already being disconnected and tested.

Moving the board as part of a replacement adds £250 to the price, and if you only want the existing board moved, a standalone relocation is £395. The meter stays where it is, because it belongs to your supplier, but the new board can usually go a short distance away.

  • Relocation with a new board, add £250
  • Standalone relocation £395

Getting to you

Reaching Crosspost from the A23

The A23 brings us most of the way before we turn off into Bolney parish. Getting here costs you nothing extra. One shot of the board and a second of the spot you have in mind are enough for us to fix the price. When a fault cuts the power altogether, ring us and we can often get to Crosspost that same day.

It depends on the route and the size of cable needed between the meter and the new position. A few metres is usually straightforward. Longer runs may need heavier tails or a small switch fuse beside the meter, which we price in advance. We look at your photos and suggest the shortest practical route.

It can be, provided the spot is dry, protected from damage and easy to get to. Some outbuildings are too damp or exposed, and a board there suffers over time. If yours is somewhere unsuitable, we explain the options, including bringing it into the house as part of the replacement.

Expect a little filling and touching up where cables are rerouted and the old board was fixed. We keep chasing to a minimum by using existing routes, voids and neat trunking where possible, and we agree the route with you before starting, so you know exactly which walls will be affected.
