Homes by the green and lanes

Older homes close to the Downs

Nepcote belongs to Findon parish but has a character of its own, with homes around the green and along the lanes that rise towards the Downs. As elsewhere in Findon, they range from older flint and brick buildings to twentieth century houses, and the boards vary just as much: some still with rewireable fuses, others with a single RCD fitted decades ago.

We replace whatever is there with one modern consumer unit, label every circuit and test the whole installation. In older buildings we take care with fixings and cable routes, because flint and old lime mortar do not forgive heavy handed drilling.

  • Rewireable fuses and early RCD boards replaced
  • Careful fixings in older walls
  • Whole installation tested
  • Plain English circuit labels

Earth rods in dry chalk

On a TT supply the earth comes from a metal rod sunk into the soil, so the ground itself decides how well that earth performs. Chalk downland like the slopes towards Cissbury can give a relatively high earth resistance, and it tends to rise further in a dry summer as the ground dries out. A reading that is comfortable in February may look far worse in August.

If your home has an earth rod, we measure its resistance as part of every board change and record the result on your certificate. Where it is too high, we can add or replace an electrode, and the RCD protection on the new board is chosen to suit a TT system. Homes earthed through the network cable are tested too.

  • Earth rod resistance measured
  • Readings recorded on your certificate
  • RCD protection chosen for TT systems
  • Network earths tested as well
Getting to you

Off the A27 and up to the green

Once we leave the A27 at Worthing it is a short climb north into Findon and across to the green, so getting to you is rarely a long haul. Send us pictures of the board by text, and once the price is agreed you pick the date. Urgent faults are better phoned through, and we can often help that same day.

It can. Earth resistance changes with the moisture in the ground, and on chalk the difference between winter and a dry summer can be noticeable. We record the reading on the day and make sure the RCD protection leaves a safe margin, so the installation stays protected even when the ground is at its driest.

Of course. Tell us the dates you want to avoid when you book, whether that is the fair, a family event or simply a busy week, and we will offer days that suit. Expect the supply to be off for four to six hours on a typical board change, and it helps if we can park near the house.

Yes. The old board, fuses and any redundant cable we remove leave with us for proper disposal. Some very old fuse carriers contain asbestos pads, so if we find anything that might, we stop, explain what it is and agree the safest way forward with you before carrying on. Nothing is left in your bin.
