Three generations of housing, three kinds of board
Homes here range from older cottages on the original roads, through bungalows and houses from the later twentieth century, to the large estates built in recent years. Each tends to have its own kind of board. The oldest may still have rewirable fuses, the middle years often have a split load board with a single RCD, and newer homes usually have a dual RCD board fitted by the developer.
A newer board is not automatically the right board. Developer fitted dual RCD units put several circuits on each RCD, so one fault can take out half the house. For £625 upwards, a full RCBO board protects every circuit separately, and we test each one before leaving.
- Rewirable fuse boxes replaced
- Single RCD split load boards upgraded
- Developer dual RCD boards to RCBO
- Every circuit tested on the day

Getting the board ready for an EV charger
Plenty of Stone Cross homes have their own driveway, which makes a home charge point an easy decision. The board is often the sticking point. A charger is a large, long running load, and older boards may have no spare way, no suitable RCD protection, or tails and a main switch that need a closer look. We check all of that before your charger installer arrives.
A new board with spare ways and Type 2 surge protection, which comes as standard, leaves room for the charger circuit and later additions such as a heat pump or battery. If you already have a modern board and only want surge protection added, the retrofit is £165.
- Spare ways for a charger circuit
- Main switch and tails checked
- Type 2 surge protection included
- Surge retrofit on its own £165
Reaching Stone Cross
Stone Cross is a straightforward run east along the A27 from Brighton and Hove, out past Polegate. Want a price before anything else? A photograph of the board is enough to fix it, and you pick a date afterwards. Where the power has gone and refuses to reset, a call gets someone heading your way, the same day if we can.

Asked in Stone Cross
Call for a straight answer from an installer, not a call centre.
Call 0333 360 8691Not always. If it trips rarely and you are not adding big loads, it may be fine for now, and a standalone EICR from £175 can confirm that. An upgrade makes sense when nuisance trips keep cutting several circuits at once, or when you are adding a charger, heat pump or battery. A full RCBO board starts at £625.
A consumer unit change is notifiable work under Part P of the Building Regulations. As Part P registered installers we notify Building Control for you, so there is nothing to arrange yourself. Within 48 hours your Electrical Installation Certificate arrives by email, and a compliance certificate is issued for the work too; both are worth keeping with your house documents.
Fitting usually takes 4 to 6 hours, with the supply switched off for much of that while the board is changed and each circuit tested. We tell you before it goes off, so you can charge phones and plan around it. Fridges and freezers stay cold for hours if the doors are kept shut.
